...but I hope to rectify the latter very soon.

Hi, all. I don't know where I've been all this time (a cave, I guess :D ) but I just got turned on to Egnater modular amps and I am absolutely buzzed. I've been checking out all the information online that I can find and have been lurking on the board for a couple of days.

So tell me, what power amps are people using with the M4's? I'm vascillating between a Mod50 and an M4 (cost vs versatility).

Currently I'm playing through a Vox AC30CC2X and it's a keeper. But the concept of all that flexibility, combined with great tone, is too good to pass up. :)

Welcome!

I don't know how it compares to an actual vox, but the vx module from egnater may be my favorite one I've tried!

I think the VHT power amps seems to be popular among m4 users, but I'm sure some of them will chime in soon. Egnater's kick ass, you won't be disappointed either way you go!

Sit tight. Once my M4 gets here I will be making a shootout video with a buddy and his new Vox Custom Classic combo. The guy traded his Mesa Recording Pre and a 2:100 for it. I think he's nuts.

I have the VX and EG5 on order and will most likely choose the SL for the super bonus module. I will be running it W/D with one of the points of emphasis being how close the VX can get to the real deal.

As for the VHT, Jeff told me over the phone that they were the benchmark for testing the M4 and recommended the 2/50/2. I got a steal on the Rivera and just couldn't pass it up.

Dude, the TBR-5 will be awesome with the M4.
I've been using a TBR-2SL, which is the powe amp guts of a TBR-5 with a preamp section included.

Does the M4 have multiple configurable outputs - so that the different modules can be routed to different power amps (or separate sides of a single power amp, using different tubes)?

no.

It has a pair of mono parallel outs.

Once my M4 gets here i will be running it either through a Marshall 9100 50w per side poweramp using 5881 valves or at least the robust Sovtek version that Marshall were using for a few years when stocks of EL34s were erratic

OR

I will be running it through a 10W single ended power amp that an ampmaker friend is building for me
That will probably run a 5881 as well, but at only 10w maybe I can crank it a bit more at home.

I used a 9100 for a couple of years.

Killer power amp.

My experience: Sovtek 5881's sounded too bright in that amp. I couldn't tune the harshness out, even with the presence on zero and preamp's treble on zero.

With JJ 6L6's, it was a ripping beast. Unreal, really. I loved that amp, and wish I still had it.

I have an M4 that I run with a Mesa Stereo 50/50 (the older one). My wife (who is strangely a tone stickler, even though she doesn't even play guitar) says this is the best rig I've ever had since she's known me. I tend to agree.

As far as other power amps go, for the price of a VHT or Randall RT250, I thought VERY seriously about ultimately getting two Egnater Rebels and going through the effects return of each for a stereo rig. The 50/50 is footing the bill great, though. But it's still in my mind unless Egnater decides to come up with a matching poweramp to the M4.

HAHA, My 59 y/o Mother thinks my Egnater stuff sounds the best out of anything I've had.

Cool idea on the 2 Rebels for power.

That's why I have two seminar heads

So does my father! He is really into high end audio so it was pretty cool when he came in unannounced and said "wow, this thing just sounds much clearer...it just sounds way better". :D

Carvin makes a very affordable 50/50 all-tube power amp. Wonder if it would be suitable?

Well the thing I noticed when I A/B'd my Rivera against the Mesa 2:100 is that the preamp has way more affect on the overall tone. We used the Mesa Recording Pre and I switched thru every possible option on the TBR-5 (Gene, you now how versatile these things are :D ) and other than the noticeable difference between the EL34's and 6L6's the tones were very similar. There was more difference when I switched from my Fender to the Godin. In fact I'm up in the air over which way to go for the other two slots in the M4.

Part of me wants to use 2 modules for each guitar due to how dissimilar they are tonally. Conversely I'm thinking if I pick up a Gmajor or something I can balance it out with the onboard EQ. Anyway I'm hijacking. The point I'm driving at here is that the Carvin or any other affordable poweramp will probably work. Frank said himself in the Premier Guitar interview that the preamp is where you want the flexibility.

Thanks, chode7.

Y'all are going to have to educate me a little because there's something I don't quite understand: the interplay between the modules/preamp stage and the power section. Based on what I've been able to glean, I am under the impression that with these modular amps, all the action seems to be in the preamp stage and the only requirement for the power amp (in the case of the M4) is that it be a decent tube amp. I assume that the power stage / power amp isn't supposed to be clipping? Or have I got that wrong?

I use the RT2/50  gives you choice of 6l6 or el34 tubes with midi switching and it is designed by Bruce Egnater and all the boards are stamped Egnater inside the unit. I have a friend that I lent one of the rt2/50's with a carvin Quad X, he is a marshall mesa boogie kind of guy so i will let you know what he thinks of the Rt.

Now that really depends on what you're going for. If you have a Mesa 20/20 for instance I would say you floor it. El 84's break up very naturally and sound best (to me) when they are overdriven. Same with El 34's. I like to back down the wattage on the Rivera to 30w and crank it. I'll let some of the big bottle boys chime in on the 6550's/KT88's.

Now to route modules to different power sections you would want the RT2/50. Midi switching for each of the power sections is a killer feature.
