Yeah, I have a Mayones addiction (this is number 3) and I'm totally ok with it.
This one came from Omega Music in Belgium. They're one of two shops in the world to offer this version of the Duvell Elite. The other one wouldn't return my emails or calls. Omega was awesome to deal with. It can be a gamble buying from a shop in another country, but they were pros all the way.
So this is a Buckeye Burl Master Builder Collection. I guess that means it's built by their top luthiers. The quality is noticeably better than my Koa Limited. And I was surprised by that, as the Koa is a custom shop model. And this one is like the custom, custom shop. Sorta like how Mercedes has the AMG series, but then on top of that they have the AMG Black Editions. This thing plays better than my other two. The fretwork is a little nicer. The action is perfect. The nut is cut a little better. Neck feels the same: great. Sounds terrific. Nice and tight and authoritative. The regular Poplar version is a little sweeter sounding and rounder. This one's a bit more "djenty" if I had to put a term to it. The Koa/Limba one has more rawness to its sound. Hard to describe.
When UPS dropped it off they required me to pay a brokerage fee and the customs tax/duty. But the driver told me they only take money order. I was like WTF, nobody told me that. How am I supposed to get a money order if I don't know how much the fee is going to be until you show up at my door? Plus, when I was on the phone with UPS dealing with an issue with customs (Lacey Act BS), they said I could pay with a card at the door. So I had to beg the driver to wait while I called UPS and sorted it out. Turns out, I can pay with a check no problem and the driver was just being weird about it.
But anyway, I love these Duvells!
I have a Duncan Pegasus bridge pickup and one of James Peters' new pickups to try at some point too. Not sure what I'll swap around just yet though. They're pretty awesome as is.
