By the way I record mostly , and wondering if I shoulda kept my decimators especially for sweeping leads ! I do notice using a single noise gate doesn’t get rid of the slight rfe signals behind the music , but just cuts the sound of everything when set to a certain threshold without actually removing the extra noise .
I just ordered a decimator gstring x for this reason. I have always had a love/hate relationship with gates. Generally, i dont need one (even boosting) but for recording, it can be annoying not using one.
The problem with the zuul or any gate really is that hum/fizzle at the end when it gates. The way i see it, a gate in front gives you the staccato djent thing at lower setting. The gate in the loop gives you the total silence when playing.
I used to use a zuul upfront and one in loop(with key obviously) The zuul in the loop was set low as fuck. All it did was make rig silent. At that setting, it didn't fuck with your notes too much. This is the setting and placement I would recommend for rock guys.
The second gate, i also keyed and put right before my volume pedal (which was last pedal before amp) This is the secret of getting rolled back cleans with a gate. The key is based off my guitar signal, which is always full. The volume pedal was set to "clean" as the min setting(rather than off) so to get a rolled back clean, i just popped it to bottom; and the zuul still gets full signal because guitar volume is maxed.
But the gate in front of amp has a lot more actual gate ability. The one in loop is not as effective for gating but super effective for noise reduction.
Long story short, i ordered the decimator to give it a try, since i just want to quiet the hiss, including microphonics while playing. The other problem i had with gates is the silence between notes makes the bleed through microphonocs even more obnoxious.
If I want to hard gate, i will buy something for in front in addition.
