I order a couple of Silver Wolf speakers from Weber and they arrived this past Thursday. I spent the weekend trying out different configurations with several amps. The description; though accurate, is pretty minimal and very few reviews. All I could get was they're low-mid focused and are a perfect pair to the Weber Grey Wolf. So I ordered them mostly blind.
I had Weber break them in before shipping them to me. I must say that I am quite pleased with the way they sound. The low-mids are the most prominent frequencies, but its also a well balanced speaker. To me you get that really good low-mid crunch as opposed to the upper-mid grind from say a V-30 or Grey Wolf.
While I do like the sound overall it's not a speaker that can work well across the board. I found that by themselves it worked really well with modded Marshall amps or to even out an overly bright amp. They however were not ear pleasing on their own with am amp that is low end or low-mid focused. The sound was a bit too bassey where it was starting to lose come clarity.
Pairing it with a Grey Wolf worked out really nicely. Both of those speakers together offered a full frequency range. With Marshall type amps the Silver Wolf kept the low-mid crunch and the Grey Wolf added back the upper-mid grind. I really liked that combo and can see why Weber states that this is a perfect pairing. This combo was an improvement on amps that are low-mid focused, but still not quite there. There still wasn't quite enough clarity for my taste.
The only other speakers I had that matched ohms to try the Silver Wolf with was some 70/80's. I wasn't expecting much from this but somehow it worked well. The Silver Wolf balanced out the blandness of the 70/80 and the 70/80 added the needed upper end clarity for the Silver Wolf to work with low-mid focused amps. Ultimately I think I'll end up blending the Silver Wolfs with a pair of Grey Wolfs in a 412 cab. For now they'll be with the 78/80's in a 412 and I'll be more than satisfied with this.
To sum it all up it's not going to be the perfect speaker that everyone will love and will work in any situation. It will however be a nice addition to the arsenal that will pair nicely with Marshall type amps and should blend well with upper-mid or high-end focused speakers.
