OD PEDALS AND HIGH PRICED AMPS - Start A War

I used an OD808 all the time with my VHT Ultra Lead, but it didn't do anything to my Herbert on channel 3 except add noise, so I sold it. I really like plugging straight into an amp and getting a tone and feel I'm happy with, it makes me feel like the amp was worth the price.

My ENGL is the first amp I've owned that I've preferred with NO pedals for rhythm OR lead. Past amps include: Bogner, Diezel, Mesa, Marshall etc. I don't mind using pedals or processors to get my sounds but I don't mind a simpler setup either.

In my experience:

1. OD's remove bass, add noise, add compression, and make everything WAY more forgiving.

I truly don't consider that "TIGHTENING" an amp.

However, I enjoy preclipping my signal before the chorus pedal into a heavy rhythm channel for that watery deftones grind.

BTW,
I LOVE OD's for adding dirt to lo gain RAWK with single channel amps. It's essential, really.

my od's

1. Xotic AC
2. VS Route 66
3. Boss OD-2
4. Hao Sole Pressure
5. Digitech Bad Monkey

I'm not anti-pedal or anti-overdrive, but I still can't wrap my brain around this whole "tightening thing."

It seems like weaker players get a "tightening" effect on their playing with double the distortion and compression, but the amp doesn't sound any "tighter" to me.

I hear a tightening effect.. Let`s say I used to run my old Koch Powertone (lotsa gain) with the gain on app.1 o clock. When I bought the ts, I turned it down to app. 10.30-11 o clock, and added the "lost" gain/saturation/whatever by turning level and tone of the ts up, and keeping drive down. To my ears, that tightened up my amp without necessarily adding more of anything (except the natural compression the preamp makes when you add more signal) I didn`t play with "more" gain, just another type of it. This will of course depend on the amp also :) But I liked the effect, and I sure as hell didn`t add more distortion. And I don`t consider myself a "weak" player :)

My current amp is the only one I tested that didn't required an OD pedal for increased gain or lowend tightness. I put a SD-1 and OD-3 in front of it and the added output made the amp sound very thin. I've had much more success with a BBE Sonic Stomp in the loop.
