I wanna take the EMGs out of the Explorer (the guitar is only usable for Metal/hard rock, and I wanna use it for my blues stuff too)

so what are you using? I want a nice vintage tone for the neck....something that'll makemy cleans sound as beautiful as possible. And in the bridge.....something that'll sound fat for rock/hardrock, and even some metal if need be, but not a sterile pickup at all.

so what you using? and where to order?

Edit:

recommend me some pots too.....

Hi Joey,

I'm using Rockinger Pickups.

http://www.rockinger.com/index.php?list=WG091

Neck: Alnico II
Bridge: Bellbucker
both 62 Euros

Pots? I don't care, I use them digital - either on or off and I mostly unsolder the useless tone pot and use it for splitting instead :D I'm buying all my guitar parts there too though . . .

Ok, so which pots you recommend? I think I cannot use the EMG ones that are already in the Explorer.

I could use the "tone" knob to split the neck humbucker that way it'll give me a "single coilish" tone if I want to correct?

so, which pots my friend? (I can use the same pickup selector switch that's already in the guitar, it doesn't make a difference ?)

500k for tone and vol, probably those with a long shaft - depends on your lesters/guitars

alright. does the Pot need to be specifically made to "split" the coil? because I don't see any "split coil pots" in their website.

oh, ok...but my Explorer has only two pots (one volume and one tone) that diagram is for a 4 pot guitar........

I need to order a volume/tone pot config. but if I wan to split the neck I have to order two volume pots and asign one to the split? or should I order the volume/tone config and asign the split to the tone pot?

Then just split the neck or get a pull/push/drop/throwaway pot, Joey . . .

Why not just get an EMG-89? Pot, etc. included...
B/c EMGs suck major ass :D

ouch :D

Have you tested Kloppmanns?
In my opinion Kloppman and Häussel have the best pickups!!!

I still have an EMG loaded fender though and am suprisingly pleased with the SAs 18v mod for
SRV tone...but the 81 must DIEEE!!! hehehe

tschuuus

Yeah I've tried Häussels - and replaced all except one (P90s) with Rockingers :D

They sound too harsh (those I've tried: Tozz and Vin+) - probably the ceramic types are just not my style.

I've talked with a Class AAA+++ luthier and (besides other brands) he also likes (certain) Rockinger pickups a lot - so I'm not alone here :D

Nah, I dig the EMGs for the tight metal stuff, but other than that they DO sound too sterile for blues-pop. Now, My EMG loaded fender strat (SA/SA/85) sounds ROCKING! even the 85 sounds VERY good for pure rock, I just got to lower the volume knob a little bit so it looses a bit of the "tightness" but othe than that I love that guitar and how it sounds.....the SAs rock!

But this Explorer has 60/81 and they're ok for modern metal stuff, and since I don't play that stuff that much the guitar just sits here....a wonderful, cool looking guitar that plays like butten I WANNA USE IT DAMNIT!

Olaf,

one last thing...... bare with me here...... how do I split the coils? should a tech know how to do this ? I'll take the guitar to a tech to get the passives installed so, if he knows how to do it's ok. I just want to make sure I buy everything I'll need together in one shipment.

so:

the neck pickup
the bridge pickup
500k ohm pots (one volume and one tone)

anything else needed to split the neck bucker? I don't want to drill the guitar.....more like make the tone knob "pull/push" to split the coil...

Well, you know what they say about opinions. :D

Seriously though, I think the 89 might just be what Joey wants...

thanks Scott.....but like I said EMGs are starting to sound too sterile to my ears with the only exception of the SA/SA/85 system that my blues strat has (maybe it has to do with the guitars.....or maybe EMGS back then where a bit less sterile (I bough the system like 12 years ago)

Olaf,

thanks once again my friend... fuck it I'll do it myself... I have the soldering iron here I guess it shouldn't be that hard following the diagram you posted.

In my case that's only two pots, it's the same right?

chapparal.jpg

I've used for a couple of years (in the 90s - following the hype, actually not, the axe was shipped with them) EMGs - in that Hamer Chapparal Cst. That was a EMG89 too.

Flat, lifeless, overpowered pickups IMO.

That diagram is useless for you Joey. I'll post another . . . tomorrow or so . . .

Olaf,
Have you heard of the new German-made Amber pickups? The guy who builds them was at the Musikmesse. He has made special sets for Vigier guitars at their request.
Some players from the Les Paul Forum, who were in Germany, heard these PAF style humbuckers and said they really give the other boutique pickup builders something to think about.
