Ok yeah, I can see that. Anything next to a boosted JMP 2203 can sound, well just wrong, and the Wizards are often compared to just that.

I will say the the Wizard 800 that recently visited was definitely more Marshally. Not surprising news really, other than it was a cool amp.
Doesn't even have to be boosted IME in AB comparison to expose where the Wizard's are lacking tonally vs Marshall's, but of course Wizard's also do plenty of great things Marshall's don't quite have like the crisp highs, and that rock solid definition quality to the notes and hard hitting punch, although the early '70's Superlead to a great job of some of that too in their own way. I'm just picky about this quality and the Wizard's I find lacking in that department, but still excellent amps for sure overall. I've kept my Wizard for 6 years now. Not many other amps I've kept as long lol

Ok so picked up that Rev G. Wow, really different to the 00's 3-channel. More gain, way tighter and more aggressive all round - winner. Also found a local guy with a Rev C & F. He's sadly not willing to sell either but is happy to loan them to us for a while. Keen to hear what the differences are in person.

Was a triple NAD actually - a newish SLO and '97 XTC arrived too.

No pun intended but I find those new SLO’s not too BAD. The crunch setting on the normal channel has enough gain to play hard rock without a boost. On the pre BAD ones it was more like a nice 800 on 7 (pre) kind of OD for crunch. On the Ecstasy, don’t be afraid to set the presence pretty high if you want the gain sounds to have more bite and edge.

Congrats! 3 Great amp right there. And we told you! The 3 channel versions are like the "from concentrate oj" version of recto's lol. Wait till you try the F and then the C to get to the "fresh squeezed" version. That would be amazing if you could have all those recto versions on your channel. You're the only channel that could actually show the differences properly lol

I think the only thing that is missing from Zen Amp's videos is Sam at the end telling us if he approves of the tone of the amp.

hells yes you bought that!

I thought it was advertised at a decent price too for what it is.

Look forward to hearing it!

Don’t you realize how much flavour and nutrition is lost when orange juice is exposed to oxygen? To truly treat your tastebuds you’ve got to mainline those oranges via an IV drip or a hermetically sealed feeding tube at the very least. Geez, all this time I thought you were serious about those Vitamin Rev C+ delicasies.

Nice man, glad it worked out. I think that was a smart trade. Like I said, old two channel Rev G's will continue to go up in price. The 3-channel Rectos aren't awful or anything but people keep trying to make them and their revisions a thing, saying they sound as good as the old Rev G's and F's and such and they just don't. I think you made the right move 100%.

Congrats!

You certainly did tell me!

Videos are on hiatus for a while, but I'll see what I can swing while we have the C & F.

Actually interested to hear from the hardcore Mesa guys - any general trends between C, F and G you've noticed?

Yeah they're really going up. Ended up doing a trade with the seller so no money changed hands. Feels like a free amp, or at least that's how I kid myself.

Mate you don't want to know what I've paid for a rev F that's coming from overseas.. crazy. But you can't find them 'cheap' anywhere now.

haha yeah I sold my MTL so if I buy something else for less... i'm actually making money! 😂

The G Duals I had, there was a low end 'bloat' that was hard to get rid of even with a boost. The G triple doesn't have that. The F, more detail/clarity/organic thing going on without any bloat..also slightly brighter/tighter.
The C, brighter and tighter yet with even more clarity/detail/organic quality...you can dime the mids and no honk, just a nice upper mid push. But the biggest surprise for me was the punch the amp has....it hit almost as hard as a Wizard or SLO, Superlead..which the F or G didn't have...they can even feel slightly underpowered comparatively speaking. You can also dime the Bass and 'almost' get the wall of sound, and it doesn't get woofy like the G or F can.

Ok cheers, curious if I notice the same although I imagine there's a lot of variance with these things.

At some point Mesa started biasing the output tubes colder and colder, I wonder if this was a factor through the revisions as well as the circuit/tranny changes.

Hard to say; I do know that when I'd check the bias on bold/diode my 6L6/EL34s were in a good spot at around 32-36ma....One of the F Triples I had, had a bias screw mod installed.
