I'm watching the VH-1 honors show with Heart and Ozzy and whatnot, when Ozzy comes out to do a few songs. So his new tune sounds fine, then they tear into Crazy Train. Ozzy sounds great, Zack sounds like he's got a wah half cocked part of the time. Here's the thing; I think Wylde hits about every note in the song, but it just isn't right. So I've come to the conclusion:

Zack Wylde has a load of talent but not much taste.

I think he could probably play anything he wants, and sometimes he has some pretty good tone. But his odd sound setup and unfortunate selection of pinch harmonics just leaves me cold.

If you want to hear tasty playing by Zakk, go and listen to
Zakk Wylde: Book of Shadows
Pride & Glory: Pride & Glory

No Rest For The Wicked was kick ass as well, Zakks biggest problem these days is he's tuned to Z and runs a Chorus full out constantly for his rhythmn tone :gethim: I hate that shit, washes out your tone completely......

If he'd got back to standard tuning or even in D and get rid of that Chorus, and his neanderthal (-sp) attitude, he might be alright.

But alas.............

During practice with my band I'll start throwing in pinch harmonics a la Zack. (just like tim oliphant in rockstar) Good for a laugh, pisses off the rest of the band.
He over uses that crap. I love his earlier tone. Still a freaking bad ass.

I agree 100%

I was flippin' channels the other day and ran across the video for "bark at the moon" that Ozzy & Crew did for the VH-1 Rock Honors thingy. He smoked the song playing wise, but was tuned very oddly, I'm thinking drop-C, and it had that distinct chorus sound. Horrible, washed-out tone, kickass chops for sure, though

That's what I'm getting at. I'm not really bagging on his skills, just his choices of tuning, effects, and harmonics.

Sometimes simpler is just better.

His playing is amazing but it is getting old with the nonsense he is pulling.

That's exactly what I was about to reply when I read the first post.

But I haven't really paid attention to Zakk since those two albums...sounds like he's gone in a different direction...

Randy>Jake>Brad Gillis>>>>>>>>>>>Zakk

eh....that's bunk....Gillis is weak, and Jake, while a decent player, loses points for being a dumbass drunk that pissed his career away and couldn't even take care of his own daughter.

+1

I can't stand his playing style at all. His tone is terrible as well.

I like pride and glory and earlier zakk but after listening to his BLS garbage and (the last straw) watching him completely butcher crazy train and bark at the moon recently I think he is absolutely terrible. He is now less tasteful than C.C. Deville.

He is possibly the least tasteful guitar hero of all time at this point.

I think you just nailed Zakk Wylde (I have to snicker every time I see that ridiculous phoney name). He's got incredible chops but he never quite does it for me.

I always feel that Zakk has a poor sense for making things sound "musical". There are some guys who have a great ability to write memorable riffs. In the heavy-rock area, I'd say Dimebag was one of the best for playing a riff and next thing you know, it's stuck in your head forever. With Zakk, out of the tons of riffs he has written, I can only think of a few that stand out as memorable.

I think Zakk has lost something since the No More Tears album. But some of my favorite Ozzy tunes are with Zakk. The last tune on NO Rest For The Wicked is great!

Zakk has done the same thing EVH did as time went on; he started adding WAY too much chorus and he sounds the same on every single song/CD now. Love ZW's older stuff, regarding both playing and tone. But now he's more of a caricature of his former self. After he decided to pose as a tough-guy biker rather than practice guitar, he stopped progressing, IMHO.
