I remember the first time I heard Drapery Falls over a decade ago. At the time, I was still struggling to appreciate "growling" vocals and was initially super torn about this band. The musical arrangements and proggy flow of the music was so captivating that I stuck with it. Over time and after repeated listens, it's like a switch flipped in my brain and I couldn't believe how bad ass Akerfeldt's vocals were, and how significantly they contributed to the aggression of Opeth's music.

I've seen them 4-5 times live, including the more recent Red Rocks DVD show, and minus their last few albums I'd say as a whole they are my favorite band. So I thought I'd share this video I found of Jack Manges (shout out bro!) covering an older tune Moonlapse Vertigo. Jack's split screen coverage of all the guitar parts really stands out as a great performance. Cheers!

i liked that clean album they did probably almost 20 years ago now the most

I’m sure I‘m in the minority on this one, but I never cared that much for their earlier material. Then I got heavily into Ghost Reveries and still feel it’s their best work by far. After that release I felt let down more and more by each subsequent album.

Ghost Reveries definitely stands out as one of their best. Blackwater Park is another, but in general My Arms, Your Hearse through Watershed is just mesmerizing to me.

I don't really like the direction they have taken with their more "vintage prog" sound of late. Watershed marked a turning point - Michael's vocals started to get more bluesy/whiney sounding and came forward in the mixes. Then they really dropped their "metal" foundation in favor of a more classic sound. I know this disappointed a lot of fans (myself included, to an extent) but I'm glad they are still touring and making creative music.

Here's some cool studio footage:

Opeth is awesome, just great songs and structure and playing, everything. Most of their newer “smooth jazz” or “pretentious prog” or whatever we want to call it is good depending on my mood and what I feel like listening to that day. Their older stuff is good any day though.

I’ve never tried to learn any of their songs, but I saw a couple interviews where he said they play in straight E tuning, maybe drop D sometimes, can’t remember exactly. But they get a great heavy sound like that.

I plan on going. Mastodon are cool but this show will be my entrance to Oprah. Have never really given them a shot.
This will be my third time seeing opeth but I'm 20 or so mastodon shows in... gonna be fun.

Damnation may be my favorite album ever. I saw them recently with Mastadon--I think it was my 7th time seeing Opeth. Always a tight band.

Big Fan. A friend turned me on to them watching Live At Shepherd's Bush/Lamentations. Around that time Ghost Reverses came out, which is an awesome album. Then I got Blackwater Park, and I was hooked. I still like their newer stuff, simply because the musicianship is off the charts. I now own every album in their catalog.

Only saw them live once, with Lamb Of God and Megadeth. All 3 killed it!

Yeah, I rocked that cd hard when it came out, I might have to dig it out, haven’t listened to it in probably 15 years. Their heavier stuff is good just not really my thing

I love Opeth...old Opeth...not this 70's prog crap Opeth.

Love opeth! Seen them at a 500 seat show… was incredible

Dude, that was fucking awesome. Great job!!

Edit: nm I thought that was Meeotch's video

Their last good album was Watershed. Pure garbage after that.

Ghost Reveries is what got me into them. It's such a great album. I really gained an appreciation for Black Water Park with their Live at Albert Hall DVD. I wore that DVD out when it came out lol. Ghost Reveries and Black Water Park are my favorites from them.

Ghost Reveries and everything after that has somewhat lost me. I check in with each album but generally when I need an Opeth fix, I reach for Blackwater Park.
