OK, get on google maps....
The Cave Creek, Carefree, Paradise Valley, North Scottsdale areas are very nice.
Wickenburg is close enough to the Valley for convenience but far away enough to not be gangsta... some very nice properties there although it sits on the main road to Las Vegas and the river cities.
Surprise has some nice new areas. To the SW, Estrella Mountain Ranch is nice. Forget Gila Bend, its Rez.
Glendale, Peoria, Phoenix areas, particularly South near I-10 are predominantly Latino, Spanish language billboards and businesses, (I'm not saying this to be racist, just trying to give you a feel for the city).
North Phoenix areas particularly mountain pass communities, Biltmore district are very nice, but bring big stacks $$$.
Extreme SE Phoenix, Ahwatukee area West of I-10 in the South Mountain foothills is nice.
Stay out of Guadalupe and that whole area of Tempe.
Extreme South Chandler, Ocotillo area is very exclusive. South and East out of the town centers, Chandler and Gilbert are nice.
Extreme North East Mesa is nice, but like Gilbert, is a predominantly Mormon area, they run the city government, police and fire, schools, etc.
Queen Creek, San Tan Valley, Johnson Ranch have some very nice houses cheap, but beware these are County run communities, no city police, just Maricopa County Sheriff's Dept. Deputies, so response times are very poor because they have a LOT of ground to cover. Very hard hit by the housing collapse.
Schools can be great, but you have to pick school by school. I moved my family into an area where my kids got into the C.A.T.S. gifted program. I don't brag on my kids much cuz I don't want to come off as a jerk, but the Gilbert/Chandler schools did OK by my family.
My oldest got a full scholarship to U of A, graduated with honors, is now in pharm school, charter member of his university in a national frat, Kappa Psi.
My middle child is currently attending U of A on scholarship.
My youngest is a Junior in HS and is a delegate at Girls State next month, plans to go to U of A.

Cave Creek should very nice for you and your family.
But realize Phoenix is a large urban area with it's share of big city nastiness.

I've been a resident of the Phoenix area since I was 13 and I have to admit, I love it here. Sure there's problems, like everywhere else, but I'm from Detroit, so there it is. I will take hot summers any day over snow (snow? haven't seen a meaningful amount in 20 years) and - as others have said - the fall/winter/spring seasons are fantastic. We have over 300 days of sun. Forget that depressing, bitter winter bluster, there simply isn't any of that in AZ.

Cave Creek is generally considered a nice area, with space (desert) between homes in many areas, but not all. There are hundreds of developments built on smaller lots, and home prices are fantastic for buyers right now.

Bugs? Nuke 'em with insecticide. Critters (of both the 4 and 2-legged type)? Shoot 'em. We have the "home as castle" law here where a man has a right to defend his family and property from criminals - with deadly force, as required by the situation.

This might be off-topic, but Phoenix also has some of the best, um, "Gentlemen's Clubs", in the USA. Not that this matters to an old Rocker like myself . . .

Come on down! You could do worse, like move to Detroit . . .

Matt

I would love to move out of AZ, Were in Surprise, There is no music scene at all, No arts whatsoever and people are incredibly rude and somewhat paranoid. I wont go into the political Idiots and hypocrisy here, But Its no wonder Sarah Palin bought a house in the valley. I would go south if I were you

Thanks for all of the responses. A lot of information there. A friend of mine is moving there in July so probably the best thing to do would be to come for a visit once he gets settled and check it out for myself.
