People love Carter these days...what short memories we have.

I think Kage summed it up accurately

Carter is getting his nobel prizes for his work with Habitats for humanity which has nothing to do with his presidency. His administration will never be considered successfull

That may be part of it, but the press goes running to him constantly asking about foreign policy decisions and actions. Totally forgetting that he was by far the worst president this country has ever seen, and his biggest failures were foreign policy. The equivalent of asking Michael Jackson what to do about pedophiles...

History will be kind to Bush whether people of today think he deserves it or not.

Why the hell would anyone vote? After the last 2 elections I think it's been proven beyond a reasonable doubt that it doesn't matter who you vote for. Electoral college my ass. Do we really need such an antiquated voting process with the technology we possess? If Mccain gets elected expect 4 more years of war. I have a sinking suspicion that G-dubs little coup de gras will be Iran. No vote here.

You don't understand the electoral college. Without it our elections would be decided by the people in SoCal, Chicago and NYC. Nobody else would get a say.

A vote for Ron Paul is a wasted vote, might as well vote for Ralph Nader....RP has zero chance of winning. It might be OK as a protest vote.

Obama has no experience in foreign affairs and would be dangerous IMO. This inexperience alone disqualifies him for the job of Commander and Chief of the armed forces.

Hillary Clinton, might surprise you. I am in favor of universal health coverage, the time has come to join the rest of the western world. We are the only country in western civilization that doesn't consider health care a right of citizenship rather than a privilege for those wealthy enough to afford it. This issue is so important and the Clintons have been on the right side of it for years. Also there is a lot to be said for having Bill Clinton in the background aiding and assisting Hillary. Bill was an excellent foreign affairs president who might talk about withdrawing from Iraq, but I suspect will not be so quick to leave the area to the manipulations of the terrorist. Terrorist who will one day have and USE nuclear weapons if we fail to stay in the region and monitor and confront their attempts to get nuclear material (this is the real reason we are staying in the area IMO).

McCain is a good man, and is very solid in foreign affairs; but I think the country (and myself) are just plain tired of republicans. The good old boy network of politicians and corporate America is so immoral and greedy that I think we need to give the democrats a chance.

But what I really fear is that the model for our government has become so flawed and corrupted by special interest and greed from corporate America that it really doesn't matter who wins, we are still doomed by the blind allegiance to the bottom line over human rights and common compassion for the less fortunate.

I am becoming ashamed of our country, and I thought I'd never say anything like that. Ten years ago Americans lost over 40% of their savings with the stock market debacle. All the stock analyst and traders who kept hyping a historically over-inflated market right up to the crash have never been held accountable, nor the politicians who should have known better and decided to looked the other way. Now we have the housing industry scam, just another market place pyramid scheme like the tech stocks. Shameful that our leaders don't know what is going on, or do know better and then to habitually fail to do anything about it.

bit of a rant, sorry

What if I don't live in one of those 3 cities but I'd like to have a say in who gets elected? The electoral college forces candidates to consider all 50 states, as ignoring any state can cost them the election. In a strictly popular vote contest the candidates could simply focus on the most populous areas and ignore the rest of the country.

I fail to see how this is much better then the current system.

Of course, I truly believe that everything is manipulated so far down through the chain, that voting is basically a formality.

I thought the Illuminati controlled who we can vote for. That it does not matter who gets in. They run the ship. At least that is how a friend of mine described it. Internet conspiracy dragon smoke is his favorite hobby these days.

No, the reverse would happen. Right now, everyone campaigns on the TV anyway. The electoral college is antiquated.

But I don't think that we should switch to computer voting machines while they are SO vulnerable to hacking. There was even congressional testimony saying how easy it was.

Just wanted to comment on the people who praised Clinton for the economic growth. We were in a recession, and the economy (naturally wavering up and down in the business cycle) utilized automatic stabilizers (entitlements such as welfare, social security, unemployment benefits) to stimulate economic growth. The President and Congress have very little to do with economic conditions. In fact, more than 80% of the federal budget is uncontrollable, with a progressively decreasing amount of discretionary spending.

I enjoy economics! By the way, probably McCain or Ron Paul.

Does mccain win the whole thing or is america ready for obama?

Yeah I don't understand it. That's it. Hit the nail on the head. The electoral college works fine. Maybe instead of dropping $455 billion fucking dollars on Iraq this year we should fix the voting process so I don't have to listen to Dan dickhead Rather fumble around and fuck up the play by play. Retinal scanning or fingerprint id. The last 2 elections have proven the system is flawed. I think your argument is typical of the average, complacent, lazy, and apathetic masses that are perpetuating the problem. Let's keep it status quo and let the next generation figure it out. What the hell do I know.

I say it's too early to call. Way too early.

McCain has the experience and character. But he's too liberal for real conservatives and too Republican for Democrats. A lot of people who actually vote (moderate conservatives, elderly, veterans) like McCain.

Clinton has the Democrat machine behind her and the money, and she has created the illusion of someone with experience compared to Obama, so she has strengths. Americans aren't happy right now, so a party change seems to be favored, if everything else falls into place. Clinton has the Hispanic vote (which is more talk than action, they don't vote much) and the female vote (huge, women vote more than men).

Obama has the media in his pocket so much so that Hillary feels cheated that she's not getting the standard Democrat free pass. Obama has the better personality, is more likable, and doesn't come across as a bitter cunt, which is the opposite of Hillary. That makes Obama look better in soundbites, which is about the extent of the American political attention span. Obama has the black vote (which is more talk than action, they don't vote much) and the youth vote (even bigger joke, youth will go to the trouble of attending rallies but won't bother to get out of bed to vote on election day).

Who will be a stronger opponent for McCain? It depends.

Hillary has been through the Republican machine's tests and I think all of her skeletons have been exposed, so McCain will have to attack her on her lack of judgement, lack of leadership, lack of experience, lack of integrity, etc...which leaves a lot of targets.

Obama has never been scrutinized by the Republican machine, so any skeletons he has been hiding are going to get Swift-boated out into the open very soon if he wins the nomination. His paper thin resume will crumble under inspection, and McCain will crush him in any debate that actually asks hard questions about real issues (so he's probably safe there, as debates never do that).

I think that all 3 have an equal chance right now.

You will never have retinal scans or fingerprint ID's as long as the Democrats have anything to say about it. The Democrats have already sued when states tried to require a picture ID to vote, stating it would be too much of a burden on the poor (meaning they don't want to lose the illegal alien votes that they paid good money for).
