That’s what confuses me the most about this. None of it is new. People have been pushing for equality for decades and decades. This isn’t even the first rainbow bud lite can. Why all of a sudden is everything smothered in narrative and agenda?

Hard to say really but the last decade or so has seen a nasty element come into political discourse which sees the other side as the very worst kind of human. There is no nuance. It's this "if you don't agree with me, then you are deplorable, a pedo et cetera" idea that refuses point blank to distinguish between any countering viewpoints. They are "all the same".
There is a great deal of anger about which, although always around to a certain extent, was turbocharged by the financial crash of 2008/09. People were looking for others to blame. In my view, it suits the already rich and powerful to have so many people blaming the weak and marginalised. But divide and rule was always thus.
