That’s not true at all. For tight and articulate applications, they’re no good unboosted. For anything else that can use a thick, hard hitting, growly, low mid tone, they’ll get the job done and then some.
The earlier versions (G and earlier) are ok without a boost…the earlier you go the less they are needed.

Agreed. I also prefer them boosted, but for thick, sludgy tones they can sound great. My buddy plugs straight into his post G Dual and sounds killer because he knows how to set it and plays the appropriate riffage for that tone.

I guess I should have said for me playing metal . When I first got one I flat hated it . Them I put a boost on and it became awesome to me.

I have two SD-1’s
… an ‘81 and an ‘84.
Both are real good, and would be my second choice, but for goosing my old JMP Marshalls and 800’s, they are almost perfect.
I prefer the Decibelics Golden Horse, it retains the bottom end and remains tight. I lose too much lower mids and ‘thump’ with SD-1’s.

I can’t believe that someone would choose the SD-1 if they were to A/B the SD-1 with the Decibelics.

Try one out if you get a chance.
They are very special👍

I've not tried a Decibelics yet, but this exactly how I felt when I had my '80's SD-1 next to my silver Klon Centaur (No Horse). On the waitlist list now for their Golden Royale pedal. Curious to see how they are. SD-1 might be my 3rd choice actually. 2nd for me would be this one vintage tube screamer I tried. Besides retaining more bottom end, it's really that tonal complexity/3D thing or vocal quality of the klon that sets it apart to me over other pedals. Kinda similar to what also set the Jim Kelley, Dumble and original Alnico blues apart from the rest tonally

The Golden Royale is great. You'll dig it.

Will be interesting how it’ll compare to the real deal. Will be at least a 6 month wait though it looks like

Yeah I'd like to know how they compare. I've never tried an original, not even the KTR. I got lucky with my golden royale. A buddy of mine thought it was too gainy so I traded him my regular golden horse plus cash for it. But I'm not using it at the moment. It's the hammered blue version and its just too pretty lol.

The KTR didn’t impress me. Sounded a bit brittle and filtered compared to the original ones. I bet the Decibelics would sound better

I have bought and sold a shit ton of overdrive pedals, and this one is actually one of the best I have ever heard (for my taste). Works amazing with pretty much every amp I have ever used (mostly Marshall and HiWatt designs). It says distortion, but it's more like overdrive into light distortion. I only use the crunch side. Analog and true bypass. My ultimate secret weapon pedal.

This and the Buxom Boost have proven to be pretty much all I need in the overdrive/boost department.
