The Age Old Question: 5150 vs 5150II?

Well, I answered it! And By answered it, I mean, made a video that compare the two and created even more debate. You're welcome?

Personally, when I was first getting into the gear world, I was always super curious how the two compared, as I couldn't afford both. I owned a 6505 for YEARS, and finally landed a 6505+ about 4 years after I picked up the original 6505. It was instant love for me.

I always really dug the 6505, but found I gravitated toward my Peavey XXX for being tighter, punchier, and clearer. Well, the 6505+ accomplished all of those things over the 6505 as well. Naturally, I adopted it as my main amp over the 6505, with my XXX playing stereo duty.

Which one do you guys tend to gravitate towards?

Check it out here:

I typically prefer the 5152. It's one of my favorite amps. But for that boosted tone, I much prefer using the 5150, as the 5152 for me doesn't take them as well.

The 5152 also doesn't seem picky about the cab. I'm happier with the 5150 if the cab is tighter/more agressive to help reign in the 5150, which is kinda right at the edge of sounding out of control sometimes.

Never did have the head, but I had one of the original, early 5150 2x12 combo's. I preferred it to the 5150 head I tried for no other reason than the clean channel sounded much, much better. That combo through a 4x12 used to blow the other guitarists in our band JCM900 away.

Dude can you PLEASE pick up a Peavey Valveking and make a video about it? I absolutely love mine and actually prefer it over my 6505+..

Haven't watched the vid yet but the 6505+ I had was pretty kick ass. I much preferred it over the 5150.

I'm the opposite, I had both and preferred the original by quite a lot. Both are great, though I prefer the EVH 5153S to either these days.

Another great vid - thanks for taking the time to do this. I prefer the 5150 II by a little in person, and in your clips. However I find they're pretty much interchangeable with some tweaking.

I prefer the 5150 II with a slight few circuit changes.

Come to think of it I prefer the rhy channel with a boost over the lead channel in a 5150 II. Anyone else run like this?

I don't mind the rhythm channel of the 5152, but the gain has to be up fairly high or it has this rather nasal sound. Once the gain is up, it does sound good IMHO, but by that point it's more gain than I'd want for classic rock but not nearly enough for metal (though I guess I could boost it, but I personally love the lead channel of that amp).

great video
you could make a record with either of these amps and nobody would know the difference in a mix
also Bad seed you're turning into the American version of Ola :ROFLMAO:

Owned a couple of both over the years
I prefer the II for lead playing but for rhythm the original sounds more bad ass

The 5150 ii has that nasal quality that you can’t really dial out. I used a Ist Gen in the mid 90’s for drop C stuff and it was a fantastic plug and play, metal amp. There wasn’t really anything like it back then. I know it would be blasphemy but I replaced a Silver Jub with that 5150 and couldn’t have been happier.

I had an original block letter and tried to like it, it still had peavey mids if you know what im talking about.
