Peavey 5150 vs EVH Iconic

The designer said to use channel 2 with burn on to get close to the traditional 5150 tone.
Yeah I've seen many of his posts about the amp. I'm not interested in the red channel and especially not with the burn on. I want more brawny mids, not more gain.

Yes, I tried that. Just with a tiny bump on eq in mids it significantly changed the sound to better one, IMHO.
I just tried this with my Naylor and it works amazingly well. I've had that amp for 20 years and never tried it. I tried 2 eq pedals, one with true bypass and one with a buffer. The true bypass made it darker. I guess the tube buffered effects loop likes a buffered pedal for this application.

Dude that's awesome. I gotta try that at the store. It was the only thing stopping me from buying it so far.
Yeah that thin character I hear too in the iconic and it really turns me off on the series. It doesn’t have the girth of my big boy amp collection.

1st the hate, then the love, now the obvious truth. The Iconic is fun to play quietly but has no balls in a band or vs the other versions. Buy it for the cleans then hit it with pedals. Hopefully it cuts through a mix at that point. It likely won't.

Have you played it on stage? I have and it works. Please detail you experience with it.

AxeFX 3 works too but still doesn’t compare. Anything will really work but once you’ve tasted the good real shit it’s hard to want anything else.

We have to chat quietly before we spook the non-modded Marshall crowd. It’s a touchy subject for them 😂

Yeah I should have said that it won't cut very well. Some amps cut like a knife. Some sit in the back struggling. My Vox AC50 and Naylor SD60 don't struggle. Pete Thorn has spoken about this a few times and he nails it.

I'm not here much. What do the non-modded Marshall guys say about this? I'd have to assume they don't favor high gain modded amps given they have the good stuff.

You still haven’t answered the question. Or are you just another Will Hunting?

What would all those Marshall modders be doing, if there were no non-modded Marshalls? :)

Agree with a lot of what is said here. The Iconic is great, much better than it got credit for at launch. There were the know-it-all-but-actually-know-nothings who were saying it can't be great because it only has 2 preamp tubes, and a particular dude in the metal community who was making videos about it sucking without having ever played it. Stupid shit like that wasn't helping.

I made a video about using it in a band mix and I found that it's certainly got the headroom and low end needed. Without an EQ in the loop, it will blend with another guitar in a band mix but it has a hard time cutting due to the "cocked wah" mids that the 5150 is known for being removed on this model. All you need to do is put an eq in the loop, which I did, give it a little mid bump and it rips it up with the best of them no problem.

My only gripe with the amp is it is finicky with boosts. Depending on what channel and settings your on, it can get really ugly sounding with a high output overdrive. DOES NOT like tc pre style pedals, but does just fine with sd1/tube screamer types.

overall, I like the amp and have never thought about selling it. I have heard quite a few stories of amp failure with them though, so I guess time will tell! Mine hasn't been turned on in 6 months but neither have a good number of my amps 😂

What frequency do you boost?
