Peavey 6505MH vs 100W

Hey all, this seems like a cool amp, was wondering has anyone who gigs and records replaced the 100W version with the mini?

You are sure right,I had the 6505 mh and I sold it in about 3 weeks,I have the Evh 3 5150 LBX mini head and it blows doors on the Peavey,I tried everything I had as in speakers,cabs,pedals etc and I just didn't like it and found it un-usable for my needs..IMO Peavey crammed too much stuff into a small head and the damn thing ran so hot,even after the supposed re-bias the Peavey folks are pushing,and the bias drifted really bad,and not only on mine,I even changed the power and preamp tubes, sent that amp packing with a quickness!!

I've had one for a bit and I love it. Sounds great through my Marshall 1960bx. Here's a video I did. left and right rhythm is the lead channel slightly boosted with the sd-1 (once side is mic'd, one side is direct). The lead is the crunch channel with SD-1 direct.

But I have to agree, doesn't really scream brutality like the full size 6505. Not that you were dialing it in for that.

On its own it can get a decent tone in a right guitar-pickup setup. Side by side with the 100w model sounds like crap, seriously!

Get the 120W fullsize 6505/6505+. Invest in a power break if needed.

For the rhythm tone, I'd say it's kinda middy and lacks the 'width' of big glass-tubes. For the lead tone, it works better.

This is more what I like in a good heavy rhythm tone (and one of the mini's I own...

For quite a while I had some GAS lingering for the 6505MH (the cuteness factor is strong of course), but given all the stories and some of the videos now, I think it wouldn't bring anything extra to the table compared to what I have already.

That's the thing. But know where you're buying it for. I paid 'full size head' money for my used Mark V:25, but I wanted that Mesa Mark clean + crunch and high gain in a portable/small package, after selling a Mark IV head.
I bought the Ironball specifically for bringing a good & portable rehearsal amp to other spaces, where there are maybe only cabs or cabs and mediocre heads. I was in a room with a JCM2000 TSL and a 1960BX 4x12"; I just plugged in the Ironball and it rawked! It sounds bigger than a typical EL84 mini head, especially through a 4x12!

Not to mention, if you get a 4-way footswitch, you can switch Channels, Gain Boost, Master Volume Boost and Reverb.

Completely agree with this.
If I were looking for 6505 tone I wouldn't mess with the mini. I get the portability thing, but 40, 50, 60#s isn't really that big a deal. Unless you've got physical limitations of course.

I actually played the Mini Recto and *then* the Ironball. Bought the Ironball on the spot. High-gain and tightness-wise it SLAYED the Mini Recto. (Mini Recto did have more character in the pushed clean department).

Kinda relevant to that comparison (and focus on the low-end and mid-bite
