While I prefer my Bogners, I have a VTM 120 and for the 450 I payed for it, I feel it was the best bang for the buck.
Yes, it was his first amp with Peavey. It's a Butcher (which is basically a master volume Marshall) with Jose mods. Was the VTM a James Brown design?
It was Brian Jay of Keel’s Jose modded Marshall they copied. I guess they were up for a Peavey endorsement but Peavey didn’t have any amps the guitarists wanted to actually use.I like your story better, theres also some rumours online about a band called Keel having a Jose modded amp and sending that to Peavey as the basis for the VTM.
Hard to know for sure but there’s more than a small bit of Jose/Marshall influence on the circuit.
Joe Barresi seems to be a big fan, he posts it a lot and I’m pretty sure it may have made some Tool recordings (they mention some old Peavey head),
Cool website here showing what each of the dipswitches do: https://www.ampbooks.com/mobile/classic-circuits/peavey/
I wonder if EVH and the 5150 had anything to do with it too. James Brown made it sound like he originally expected Ed to want something based of a Jose and then it never arrived and they went in a different direction. Guessing if EVH is on board to promote your amps then that’s going to be your main focus over anything else.It was Brian Jay of Keel’s Jose modded Marshall they copied. The first amp they gave Ed to try was a VTM 120, but he didn’t bite. He had moved on to the SLO and was looking for something in that vein.I wonder if EVH and the 5150 had anything to do with it too. I think the VTM ceased production when the 5150 came?
You can un ugly them with a 5150 headshell swap.I had a VTM-60 that I bought for $200 back in the mid 2000's. Great amp, ugly as hell, sounds very Marshally IMO.
You know Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger album was supposedly recorded with a VTM-120.

One more VTM video because why not. Figured I'd go more high gain with it, this is with both gain switches engaged. It still has a slightly different character to the others but it does a cool "modded high gain Marshall" thing.
I'm sure its the one I was gonna buy of reverb!!!I've got a Classic 60/60 on the way this week. Got a preamp I want to run with it; my HH is great for a WDW but not the best with the pre.
Nope....this one was at a Music Go Round....one side has lower output than the other, hopefully it's just a tube issue.....but I can still run one side just fine.I'm sure its the one I was gonna buy of reverb!!!

definitely feel like the VTM let’s a bit more low end through the gain stages, it can be a bit prone to sounding overly thick/farty in the low mids. 2204 definitely has more upper mid squish and aggression. The one thing I noticed, when I had my 60 was the 2204 felt more 'immediate' and 'present' vs the VTM. Small differences but noticeable.

100% my experience as well.I have a VTM60 I'll probably never sell; thing hangs with any $$$$ amp I've ever owned or played tbh
What exactly does a choke do?The VTM needs a choke.
