Peavey Wolfgang??

I have a thing for Goldtops. Had 2 different LP Traditional GTs that were awesome but moved on from them needing other things. I really need whammy bars on my gigging guitars these days so I've been using LP Axcess, but find myself looking at something new just for fun. I have had a few EBMM Axis in the past and may still go that route, but there are a few things that aren't perfect about them that can bug me. So my search led me to the Peavey Wolfgangs. I don't know a ton about them and haven't played one. I may hold out for one through GC that I could return if need be.
But here is a Goldtop...is this over priced or is it accurate for going resale rate?

Yeah, if it has an arched top it's not a special. The specials were slab bodies as far as remember from when I worked at a dealer that sold them. Nice guitars and came out of the case from Peavey with awesome setups, ready to go. Neck was a little small for me but I did like the pickups.

I know a thing or 2 about Peavey Wolfgang Standards

Great guitars! I have found that the used prices on them have gone up quite a bit over the last couple years for some reason.

That goldtop standard on Reverb is a looker for sure, but it is overpriced. Shouldn't be more than $1250-$1350.

The USA Peavey Wolfgang Standards and Specials are both great guitars. For anyone still interested in these, the USA Standard is a basswood body w/ bound, arched maple top and asymmetric birdseye maple neck. The USA Special is a flat-top basswood slab with an asymmetric hard rock maple neck. Pickups, electronics and most everything else on both is basically the same.

I had both back in the day and still have the cheap-o Special. Not sure if the Standard I had was a rare so-so guitar, but it never came close to my Special tonally. The Special has a lively, cutting snap to it that the Standard didn't have. Very much like a hot Tele. The Standard was a little more muted and subdued. Every one I've ever tried was a player though. They're rock solid and darn near indestructible. The pickups are insanely good too IMHO.

I switch back-and-forth between my Wolf and LPs fairly regularly. I don't think the fretboard radius change is much of an issue, but it might be for someone else. The fatter asymmetrical "C" shape to the back of the neck is a bit more pronounced than the newer EVH Wolfs and I'd say a bit more than the EBMMs as well. Works really well if you're used to a slightly fatter 50's style LP neck. That's actually more important to me than the fretboard comfort-wise.

That's promising. My Traditional is a 50s. The necks on the Axcess are a bit slimmer but not by much. I have no problem going back and forth. I prefer a little meat on the bones. I've had a few Charvel Pro Mods and the thinner necks seemed to tire my fret hand out more.

I have the exact same issue with my SoCal. Love the guitar, but especially as I'm getting up there in years, it definitely fatigues my had after a bit. It's not super thin, but just enough that I don't normally play it for an entire gig. I don't have those issues at all with the beefier necks on my LPs and PV Wolf.

that amber wolfgang is gorgeous. I have a Green flame top standard, and the next one on my list is an amber flame top, then possibly a red one. those were always my favorite colors on those guitars

I am really liking the idea of the Peavey Wolfgang. The flat top of the Axis did get to my arm. The width of the neck being a lot smaller than the LPs I am used to makes it harder to switch w/out having to think too much. Seems the PV addresses those 2 issues but would give me the whammy, tuning stability and the unfinished maple I do really like.
Still trying to figure out if the frets are a lot different than what I am used to. I found 6105 fret wire used for the PV, but can't find anything to confirm what's on the Axcess.
Just hard to pull the trigger w/out getting to play one. I don't 'Need' it and I've never been more comfortable on a guitar than I am on the LP Axcess.

It's getting extremely hard to find a decent wolfgang these days and especially for one that is fair priced. The market has pushed these so high, that I've actually decided I'm no longer going to look for one at all and simply wait for peavey to release their custom shop again for the wolfgangs. Why buy a 1700 wolfgang when you can order a custom shop to your specs, brand new mint, for 2400? Just doesn't make sense to me.

I actually want one for a van halen tribute band I'm trying to start. Either I'm going warmoth Black/red/white frankenstrat, or I'm waiting for the peavey custom shop to open their doors. I'm not paying the kind of money the original EVH models are wanting for the quality they're currently in.

Patent has ran out on the original wolfgang design, so peavey can build a custom shop guitar with the evh wolfgang shape in any colour you want. It will be identical to the original wolfgangs down to the pickup switch selector location. When you can choose the top you want, the figure, the colour, and it will be unplayed, why would you spend similar money on one that is over 25 years old?

So I've been hunting and watching sites religiously this week. Had a mint Patent Pending Goldtop PV Wolf offered, but the price was a bit high and I just couldn't pull the trigger. Offered what I thought was a fair price on the one thats been on Reverb a while and they wouldn't budge much.
Right after I passed on those 2 a 2011 EBMM Axis Tribute Goldtop came up on GC for 1400ish. I thought...why not, I can always return it. Snagged it and should have it Monday.
Kept watching Reverb and GC for the PVs, which was probably a bad idea. As luck would have it a mint '97 Goldtop Wolf std popped up this morning at a much better price to start. Made an offer and got it.
I'll have 2 new axes next week and I am stoked to have an opportunity to play both and really figure out which I like better. Or maybe I'll hate em both? The Axis can be returned and I don't think I would lose much if I decide to flip the PV.

Now I just have to figure out how to keep 2 new guitars from the wife. I had the GC one sent to the local store so I should be able to sneak that one in. With any luck I can be home when the PV arrives and get that stashed some place it won't draw attention.
This could be worse right? I could be hiding women or substance abuse or some other forbidden thing??
