This oughtta cream some jeans around here. Great fucking vid! Vai comes in at the end to discuss his history with the amp(s) and Friedman is also featured talking specs.

Great video! Thanks!

Did anyone else notice at the 22.57-mark, Pete hits the low E string but it doesn't make a sound?

Very cool! Curious about the parallel first stage mentioned.

I thought that amp was stolen??

What was the story where they had practice, and then locked everything in the room and then somehow it got ripped off even with like someone watching or something like that?!?!

Vai actually tells the story in the vid. IIRR, it was a Lee Jackson modded Marshall that got stolen.

I thought I saw a Steve Stevens interview where he had to borrow his amps to Vai to record a DLR album, not sure which one, cuz Steve said the first recordings didn't sound good.

I haven't watched the video yet but Stevens said on FB that Vai mentioned the loaned amps for Eat Em and Smile at about 39 minutes.

I chatted with Steve last night and confirmed the amp was loaned and was a STOCK '72 100w Marshall, he never had a Jose Marshall. Which is strange cause I know i have seen John Suhr say the SS Rebel Yell Marshall was modded and he could build one. Listening to the ISO track this AM Steve posted that is what a 100w 72 Marshall sounds like stock..

The parallel thing is cool I may have to give that a try on my FrankenMarshall...

I’m assuming Steve was asked permission before his amp was pimped out

As they say, that is the tour amp for Eat Em’ and Smile
The history is there - Steve Vai borrowing Steve Stevens’ #1 Marshall (not a José amp) to record the album, and Dave later creating the Friedman SS amp by A/Bing with #1
You want the record sound, get the original SS100

Hadn’t spotted the iso track, so went to listen.
What a treat. Superb clear grind, missing that José haze.
The squeakiness perhaps a combination of a hot pickup and Steve’s hands.
SS has great ears. I think Friedman is not far behind, matching the Marshall by ear rather than by circuit component values.

That modded Jose !! But any way anybody can getta mod done on this exactly ? Or if Dave friedman can do for the people ?
This looks to have the 3-in-1 part, the dual MVs are easy enough. DF mentioned a pull-pot not made anymore in the Vai video so I don't know what that is. You'd think a DPDT would be enough.

EDIT: just noticed he doesn't read resistor codes very well, and uses the word series when he means parallel. Still lots of info.

Thanks for sharing !
That is the coolest modded amp video ever!

If I'm understanding that video I posted then it explains something about the high gain channel tones when Pete played through it. The Normal channel volume control has a 0.0047uF bright cap that is not switchable so that could explain the bright, high-harmonic nature of the tone. TBH it's too bright for me but cool nonetheless and he sure made it work.

Great video. I wonder what Jose mods have Joe Holmes Marshalls.

great sounding amp... dave just did a killer AFD mod for me that can sound like the pre master on this one.. harmonics galore

I didn't think it sounded that great through Pete's demo but really liked the sound in the room with Dave Friedman. The Rebel yell isolated guitar tone is an awesome tone. Not that gainy but just right. Love the sound of that. Many variables though, everyone has a way to dial in an amp.

+1

In the room with Dave it sounded great. I didn’t like Pete’s recording of it at all.

Great vid.
Yeah, I laughed out loud too when he mentioned the cabs under the stage.
Thanks for posting this

Wasn't that the funniest crap you have ever seen/heard?  I was dying. Just the way Vai was saying it. I couldn't believe they were under them pointing up. LOL

Yeah and Pete even mentioned that he was digging it with more presence on there to bring some different sounds out. I'm curious what pickup he was using in that guitar. He may have mentioned and I just missed it.

I agree. That cabinet Dave was using sounded killer.
