So you have designed/made a bunch of amps now.

Which is YOUR favorite?

No difficult question, I like all the amps.
Sometimes I´m not satisfied with the
features of the VH4 but it was designed
in 1994.

I hope there is more time in the future
to design more stuff. I have more experience
and have done many mistakes, so I´m ready
to reach the next level soundwise and with
better technology.

I don't know how willing you are to answer, but I must ask why you do not like the features VH4 provides? If you would re-design it what would be the key elements you would change, add and/or reduce?

From the point-of-view of features and sound, it is clearly the best amp so far that I have used. Only single thing I would change is to add MIDI-switchable serial loop. (And I have owned this amp for 5 years so I have passed the "honeymoon" phase ;) )

From the point-of view of technical lay-out, it seems a bit confusing and not neccessarily the most technician user-friendly.

...but what really matters is the sound and pleased customers.

As You said, the VH4 misses a switchable serial loop
and is hard to build because of too much unnecessary
wire layout.

Well....thank you for the Herbert "mistake" because quite frankly, I love it!

Papa, so it'd be safe to say the Schmidt is the one you're most happy with? being the last one you built with all the acquired expertise

Schmidt is not so bad

  That's like saying being jumped and molested for days on end by Playboy playmates is "not so bad." ;)

Thank God I don't care about features. I played a JCM800 with a Boss Overdrive for years. :D I think the VH4 is the best production amp for a rock studio there is. Period. I've owned and/or used everything. It's on every record I make.

Word. You said this a couple months ago and it stuck with me James. The V is a mighty amp, and in the realm of recording, it's uber versatile. The way I see it, the VH4 started it all, and continues to end it all...

Peace,
V.

Ive loved the IV ever since I plugged into it....And just like the others said, Im sure its on more records than we know........I havent played a schmidt yet, would love to...I was wondering how they stack up against a badcat, matchless, ect.??????

I'm about to book a ticket to go to Mansons in the UK to try out a Bad Cat against a Schmidt. Then I'm going up further North to try out a Matchless. If all goes to plan, I'll walk away with a Schmidt, because that is what I REALLY want.

It has everything I want right now - switchable loop that is of high quality, three channels (or two with a boosted gain and volume, if you want to look at it that way), reverb, not 200 watts :gethim: , easily switched valves, great looks and practical size, slightly more jazzy and bluesy voicing but still with roaring gain (from the clips).

That's what I want right now.

Thats what the Schmidt gives. I couldn't play it against a matchless - but the Schmidt left a Bad Cat Hot Cat far behind

I'm interested in what you experience

Yeah, it's the Hot Cat I'm particularly interested in.

The main reason why I'm for a Diezel at the moment more so than anything else, is because they have such good effects loops. I'm tired of crappy loops that either have noise issues, have a boosted signal - only practical for racks - or are just generally crap at keeping the amplifiers signal as neutral as possible. I've heard bad things about Bad Cat's loops.

It won't be until the end of the year that I go over, but I'll remember to make a thread about it or something.

I imagine also, for gain, the schmidt is the one...My custom shop badcat/ blackcat R is great, but I would like to find something to match or mate with it well..My Shiva does, but im thinking the schmdt would too....I use these amps in particular for pop/top 40/ and country rock..(I can actually get a decent amount of "twang" out my badcat and shiva)...if i can get some of that out of a schmidt too, Im going for one.........and diezels loops are good: ive had great luck w/ them in a vh4 and herbert
