So we were over at James Lugo's studio in North Hollywood, CA today, for his big ampfest (something like 60-80 amps there).

We were playing though the high gain heads...and when we reached the VH4, as you will most likely see in his clips he will be posting...

watch the joy as the VH4 just wipes the floor with all the other amps!

Everyone was just floored at how good it sounded compared to all the amps we had.

it was just HUGE!

Check it out...about 45 minutes in...(I think...)

...the V's a BEAST, no question!!!
When you play it, you have to do it good otherwise she kicks your ass telling you to go practice!!! ahahaha LOL :D

I still think they should have had all the Diezel amps there. Einstein to compete with the SLO and all the marshall modder amps and Schmidt for the low/mid gain.

Did the Herbert even make it this time?

The VH4, Friedman Naked, and H&K dominated the High-gain round. I think the Herbert was there too...

All I saw "about 45 minutes in" was an ass crack... thanks for ruining my morning...

;)

The Herbert WAS there, but we had some issues dialing in the sound. In the room it sounded great but evidently in the booth the feel was there was, "a huge hole in the mids--sounded thin." we tried engaging and dis-engaging the Mid-Cut, sweeping from side-to-side, adjusting EQ, etc.

My shortcoming was that I've only had the amp a short time and haven't had a chance t really sit with it and dial it in. Also, with only about 2 minutes to work with, well, let's just say I'm sure the Herbert would have shone as brightly as the VH4 if we had been afforded sufficient time to dial it in. The VH4 was pre-tweaked and sounded MONSTER!!

Cheers,

Remember to have you caskets made about 11.5 inches longer !!!
So the VH4 can fit. :D

Well....at least thanks for trying. Not much you can do if you haven't used it a lot or with only 2 minutes.

I'm still not buying it, though. It's not a hard amp to dial in so perhaps there is an issue with the amp itself? There are other issues to consider....the cab it was running through, speakers, the type of guitar, mic they were using, etc. Seems like an awful lot of Les Paul guitars and nothing else there which again, limits your tone as well. I've tried Scumbacks due to a recommendation from someone with this amp and it just wasn't happening in the studio either. However, with the combination of G12K-100 and V30 on my Diezel FL2x12....it flat out smokes!

I'll tell you, I haven't had any issues with things sounding thin in the studio with my Herbert. The studio I've been recording at even bought a Herbert for their own use due to me bringing mine in.
Even James Lugo on one of his previous amp fests....was complimenting how well the Herbert sounded in one of his mixes.

No doubt on the VH-4 and no surprise though....it's one of those masterpieces that is quickly becoming timeless.

Yeah--what I'll probably do is check the tubes in the Herbert and possibly even re-tube it. Also I'm thinking about the power tube complement, which currently is:

2 x EL34
2 x EL34BSTR
2 x KT88

I'm thinking maybe I'll swap out the current EL34 for SED =C= tubes or possibly even swap out one of the EL34 pairs for 6L6 tubes.

Herbert owners (or Diezel)--any suggestions?

Cheers,

In my opinion this amp needs EL34s for the mids.
Had all SED "C" 6550s in it, but missed the midrange growl from the EL34s.

Now, I have 4 x EL34s and 2 x SED "C" 6550s in mine and this combination is killer

I brought in 3 guitars, but I don't think i played through the Herbert...

I started off playing an Ibanez SZ2020FM Prestige, then moved on to an Explorer, than my Silverburst Les Paul Custom.

but none of those sounded as good as what James Lugo had in his Les Paul...he has good pickups in his...

I think Pauly's got 4 x 6550's and 2 x EL34's and he's a firm believer in that combo - I also tend to believe what he has to say considering I've heard his tunes and his clips. AND he's a MEGA Herbert fan

Hell yeah........the VH4 was DELIVERING!!!!

FWIW I have my Bogner running from 10am till 4pm today. Then switched over to the V... Amazing how that amp just conjures a different style of playing. My shoulder was sore in 30 minutes from just mondo chugga chugga playing and fast, tight riffin'. Didn't feel any pain with the 20thA, but it was conjuring entirely DIFFERENT styles of music.

I turn the V on, and it's firebreathing time... The Terminator. Relentless beast.

Face melter.

  V.
