Guitars - LPs

Currently:

EMG 81/81
SD 59/JB - 10s
SD 59/JB - 12s
G 490/498
G Burstbuckers
SD Jazz/59

I think I can live with one set of 59/JB.

What should I look at?

What might work nicely instead of that JB/59 combo for the lower stuff is a Dimarzio D-Sonic in the bridge and a Norton in the neck.

With the D-sonic and playing the lower tuned stuff....I'd put the blade towards the bridge.

What kind of sound your aiming for? What music style?

If your into metal and want the best go for Bare Knuckle Pickups Warpig or Nailbomb. They deliver. They advertise Warpig to have monstrous bass response and to be heavy as hell and they are right  Nailbomb is even tighter and not as thick sounding. Both are great mics that work on cleans too. You can get them on Alnico 5 or with ceramic magnets. At the moment I have Warpig(ceramic) at bridge on my Gibson LP Custom ´68 FT RI and with Herbert it´s the heaviest sound ever.

I really dig EMG 81s also on LPs and it´s nice to have guitar with active and other(s) with passive pickups.

I really like DiMarzio Steve Morse Pickups, both the bridge and the neck version, from very clean to very good distortion, but of course they have very pronounced mids, thats what I like ;-) (Through a Einstein)

Personally in a Les Paul the only neck pickup I've ever liked is a 'Humbucker from Hell" Everything else sounds like mud!

I'm not into metal which probably explains my preference:

My favorite pickups are the stock '57's that came in two of my Historic Les Pauls. They're brighter and more dynamic sounding than the burstbuckers and really compliment the darker sound of the Diezel amps. My other Historic Les Paul with the Burstbuckers is a nice guitar, however the pickups seem a little too dark & muddy compared to the '57's. Since I've gotten the Diezel's I've also gravitated towards playing a Strat again. The SCN Pickups in my Fender are incredible sounding in both the Herbert and Einstein.

I tend to play either really saturated tones or really clean, rarely something in the middle. Also I don't play solo or shred or that sort of thing.

That said I think I have enough pickups for metal tone, but you can never have too many :)

EMG 60 in the neck position?

I think with my 2 EMG81 set I'm done with active pickups.

Huh? What amp do you play if you don't mind me asking?

I actually dig my Burstbuckers a lot for clean work, they are very very nice. 2 57 setup sounds pretty tempting.

Did anybody have a chance to compare Burstbuckers with Burstbucker Pros or '57 Classic to '57 Classic Plus? What's the difference?

DiMarzio Steve Morse Pickups

I like pronounced mids, but what sort of tone are we talking about here?

When we talk bass do we mean like boom-boom bass that covers bass guitar area or lowish tight guitar bass?

Dimarzio D-Sonic in the bridge and a Norton in the neck.

What type of tone do you get from these pickups?

I play through a Herbert, Bogner XTC and Solano SLO 100.

I play Herbert, Bogner XTC & Uberschall, hopefully VH4 will complete my collection.

59 & JB sounds phenomenal with XTC. 59neck>XTCclean>BognerOS212 is tha bomb! I haven't heard something magical like this anywhere in my life other than in front of my rig!
Burstbucker neck with Herbert cleans & OS212 is another knockout combo.

I'm not a 4x12 fan, so I dunno, it might be muddy with a 4x12.

SD Distortion bridge and Jazz Neck. The distortion is a classic Les Paul pickup. Sounds fantastic in those guitars.

I just got rid of 2 distortions & replaced them with Gibsons :D Way too much sizzle for me.

I run through either a Bogner 2x12 o/size cab or a Soldano straight faced quad (both with V30s'). 'The Humbucker From Hell' pickup in the neck is just my personal taste! I also like the Burstbucker (#3 I think) in the bridge. :D

how does an emg 81 compare to a warpig??

Just to chime in: I think the Custom 5 SD in the bridge sounds really nice and aggressive with the Herbert. I do like the 85 in the neck and the 81 in the bridge also.

Fair enough. They do gots sum a dat sizzle to um. :jedi: :force:

How about the Rio Grande BBQ's? I've personally never played them, but I've heard really good things about them. I've heard it described as a MUCH better JB. Don't know if that's an accurrate description, but it may be worth a look.

try the seymour duncan blackouts ( dont be put off by the metal name   )

put the neck model in the bridge (alnico) and the bridge in the neck - like a lot of people do with the emg 81/85 combo .

adjust them down from the strings a bit - theyre higher output than the emgs , but have a great tone to them - like a super hot passive , but with the smooth top end of an active .

i have a set in an ESP eclipse and they rock !

I'm not sure I need anything hotter than SH4. My experience with Duncan SH line is that they sound very similar with difference being frequency response, which I can pretty much carve with an EQ.

This is very similiar to the tone I get out of my LP's with the 57 pup's & Diezel amps:

That's nice. I'll definitely think of having a 57 at least in the neck. A question though: Does it sound like that in front of the cab or in the room? Because if it sounds like that in the room it will have an ear bleeding bite miked.

Duncan Distortion bridge and '59 at the neck..incredible match that goes with EVERY type of wood but it kills with Alder. About a year ago P. Gilbert wanted to play my axe with that setup..but it's backwards for righties.  Many people think the Duncan Distortion is like the garbage high output pus (Invader, JB to me the JB is garbage never liked it..too damn scooped) and nothing could be further from the truth.

Try it and see.
