SD Distortion bridge and Jazz Neck. The distortion is a classic Les Paul pickup. Sounds fantastic in those guitars.

Didn't see this but..    What an underrated HB the Distortion is.

Duncan Distortion bridge and '59 at the neck..incredible match that goes with EVERY type of wood but it kills with Alder. About a year ago P. Gilbert wanted to play my axe with that setup..but it's backwards for righties.  Many people think the Duncan Distortion is like the garbage high output pus (Invader, JB to me the JB is garbage never liked it..too damn scooped) and nothing could be further from the truth.

Try it and see.

I just got rid of 2 distortions & replaced them with Gibsons :D Way too much sizzle for me.

What kind of sound your aiming for? What music style?

If your into metal and want the best go for Bare Knuckle Pickups Warpig or Nailbomb. They deliver. They advertise Warpig to have monstrous bass response and to be heavy as hell and they are right  Nailbomb is even tighter and not as thick sounding. Both are great mics that work on cleans too. You can get them on Alnico 5 or with ceramic magnets. At the moment I have Warpig(ceramic) at bridge on my Gibson LP Custom ´68 FT RI and with Herbert it´s the heaviest sound ever.

I really dig EMG 81s also on LPs and it´s nice to have guitar with active and other(s) with passive pickups.

how does an emg 81 compare to a warpig??

EMG 81 sounds a lot thinner and doesn´t have same big but tight bottom end(81 has tightness alright). 81 is quite compressed and to me it has more bite. Warpig being a passive pickup has much more dynamics and cleans nicely just by turning guitar´s volume pot and has much nicer cleans. Warpig sounds huge and I dig the ceramic ones because they are tighter and have more brightness on them which is very useful with Diezels.

I really like Gibson´s own Classic ´57s too and at the moment I have ´57 on neck and Warpig on bridge in my LP. It came with 2 hand wound ´57s but at the moment I´m using Warpig.

I have tried Blackouts and Live Wires too but I found 81s to be the best of the bunch. On both positions, although I have 81(b) and 85(n) on my ESP Custom Shop Viper. Blackouts are too hot for me but otherwise sound great. Much more natural and not as compressed as 81s but I really like the tightness and aggression on 81s and that´s what I want on active pickups. Live Wires are really hot too and I don´t like the way they sound. They don´t sound as "clean" as those two mentioned earlier.

If I have to use Seymour Duncans I´d choose Jazz on neck and Custom(SH-5)on bridge. I have Jazz on my ESP Custom Shop Eclipse and it came with JB on bridge but I have changed that also to Warpig. Yeah yeah I really like ´em :D And I really hate SD Distortions  Have had both 6 and 7 string versions but they´re just far too muddy and lifeless sounding for me. And I know that they´re not exactly muddy but they don´t have enough definition and just sound dull. Not for me.

I tend to play either really saturated tones or really clean, rarely something in the middle. Also I don't play solo or shred or that sort of thing.

That said I think I have enough pickups for metal tone, but you can never have too many :)

EMG 60 in the neck position?

I think with my 2 EMG81 set I'm done with active pickups.

Personally in a Les Paul the only neck pickup I've ever liked is a 'Humbucker from Hell" Everything else sounds like mud!

Huh? What amp do you play if you don't mind me asking?

My favorite pickups are the stock '57's that came in two of my Historic Les Pauls. They're brighter and more dynamic sounding than the burstbuckers and really compliment the darker sound of the Diezel amps.

I actually dig my Burstbuckers a lot for clean work, they are very very nice. 2 57 setup sounds pretty tempting.

Did anybody have a chance to compare Burstbuckers with Burstbucker Pros or '57 Classic to '57 Classic Plus? What's the difference?

DiMarzio Steve Morse Pickups

I like pronounced mids, but what sort of tone are we talking about here?

Bare Knuckle Pickups Warpig or Nailbomb. They deliver. They advertise Warpig to have monstrous bass response and to be heavy as hell and they are right

When we talk bass do we mean like boom-boom bass that covers bass guitar area or lowish tight guitar bass?

Dimarzio D-Sonic in the bridge and a Norton in the neck.

What type of tone do you get from these pickups?

I´m talking about tight and authoritative bass. I´m playing a lot of death- and thrash metal type fast quite technical stuff so the sound must have very good articulation and fast attack. I don´t have any use for this flabby bass sound and I really dislike nu-metal type sound.

D-Sonic is my favorite of DiMarzios. It´s pretty good sounding pickup.

i use dimarzio air zone(bridge) and air norton(neck) for rich overdrive and are very detailed on my xtc's.

I really like Dimarzio Super 2's for both the bridge and neck position. As a point of reference, the sound I have gone for in the past is the SD JB in the bridge and '59 in the neck. For me the Super2/Super2 setup is similar to that tonewise, but I like it better. Good definition in the bridge position and a warm beautiful clean tone in the neck position, but not too muddy.

I've also tried the SD Distortion and didn't like it. Too much treble. Didn't like the SD Custom either. It has that "PAF" tone that just wasn't for me.

vintage les pauls with JB's in the bridge and '59 in the neck sound very balanced to me, so that's what I've been using. Interesting point, though - i've found that you can get more presence and clarity sometimes if you take the pickup covers off...

In 2 words:

BARE KNUCKLE !!!

There are pickups for every single guitar and style... not just for extreme metal, for everything !!!

In fact... I'm replacing ALL my guitar pickups for bare knuckles... 4 complete sets of pickups... (bye bye, EMG, Seymour Duncan, Caparison pickups... )

You have to check it ;).

Did anybody have a chance to compare Burstbuckers with Burstbucker Pros?

I've always been a big fan of Alnico pickups because they have a really raw midrange sound. I like P90/100's as well as Gibson 498's. I've never liked EMG's or any other Lo impedance pickup systems requiring a 9v to drive a preamp in guitars, though they're good in basses.

OK. I've got 2 classic 57s that I'll be installing instead of SH4/SH1.

I still have one bridge position Burstbucker open, which I might be willing to switch to something else.

I've heard BARE KNUCKLE nailbombs & another one high gain one (don't remember the name), they sound too much like EMG81s to me.

What are Anderson pickups like?

I tend to gravitate towards PAF type of pickups lately. The Burstbucker bridge is pretty good, however I get some annoying feedback from it so I might be trying something else instead.

What might work nicely instead of that JB/59 combo for the lower stuff is a Dimarzio D-Sonic in the bridge and a Norton in the neck.

With the D-sonic and playing the lower tuned stuff....I'd put the blade towards the bridge.

+1

I use exactly that combination in one of my sevenstrings. I prefer the D-Sonic's sound when installed the blade towards the bridge. The AN is actually rather weak output pickup when compared to the D-Sonic so one might need to balance them a bit.

Ever look into WCR, Fralin, or Duncan Custom shop, they would wind you anything you want. and it would probably cost you like 300 tops.

also check lundgrens

I just put Nailbombs in my LP custom. It didn't impress me much. I liked my PRS standard with EMG 81/85 and my PRS SC 250 with stock pick-ups much better. I ended up selling the LP

I don´t like Nailbombs either. Not enough definition. I don´t like PRS pickups either but I really dig EMG 81. So tight and so articulate. Definitely not a pickup for a sloppy player. One PRS pickup I´d like to try is new Mark Tremonti model. That might be quite good.

For more of a hot PAF type sound Bare Knuckle Pickups Cold Sweat would be a winner. Great definition but still big thick sound with great bass response. At the moment I´m trying to sort out few details on my next BKP pickup and I think it´ll be a customized one. Warpig is almost there but on my LP Custom it would need to be a little brighter and I would like it to be a little sharper too. I use Herbert which is quite dark and has this little roundness in it´s sound so the pickup can be pretty sharp sounding without sounding annoying or harsh.

The SC250 treble/bass pick-ups are a new pick-up only in the SC250. They are pretty hot and similar to the Tremonti pups. I like them alot. Much better than Dragons or HFS.
