I’m going to keep my 76 Cherry burst and instead slap some new pickups in it.

I’ve done some research and the T-Tops in it are in it only for value.

I have two other LPCs that have an 81/85 and 498/496R to give an idea.

I want to throw some pickups that have some heat in it.

I’m not a fan of Aldrich’s as I find they make every guitar sound the same they’re in.

I’m thinking about buying the new JB bar style, disassembling them, and putting ceramic bars in it to convert it to a Duncan distortion bar. A lot of work but I believe I’d want to start running a Duncan distortion again.

I just sold my LPC with a JB and I’ve learned I fucking hate that pickup even with blind tests.

What dimarzios or SDs or other pickups would you do?

Duncan Distortion is one of my favs, won't argue with the plan. I like the 81/85, and like the stock Gibby pickups as well. Ever go down the bareknuckle rabbit hole? They have some pretty good sample clips that give you a pretty good idea of the sound. I have a SS set in a traditional, and I really like them, but haven't tried them in other guitars. I've got a bunch of their designs in other guitars as well. I have a set of Black Dogs I was going to swap in an R7 before I ever got the guitar, but that was 12 years ago, lol. Unfortunately I found no need to swap the stock ones, so they are still NIB. I'm keeping them for the next guitar that "needs" them. :p

I don't care for Dimarzio's or Duncan's. Not even the vintage versions. My favorite hot pickups have been vintage Dirty Fingers, '80's Schaller's and Lundgren M6's for something modern. I also like the vintage Mighty Mite 1400's and Bill Lawrence's, especially the L100 and L90

My all time favorite pickup is the '60s Gretsch Supetron and love other vintage Gretsch pickups and they kill in mahogany guitars that naturally have good growl. The Supertrons measure 4k, but sound like 10 or 11 to me and the Mighty Mite 1400's measure 8-9K, but sound like over 20k lol, almost EMG hot and made the Wagner Iron Man's I used to have sound dry and boring in comparison

Lollar DB in the bridge and a WCR Fillmore in the neck.

I’m a JB lover so maybe don’t listen to me

Bare Knuckle Rebel Yell
Bare Knuckle Miracle Man
Bare Knuckle Holy Diver
Motor City Afwayu
Motor City Black Belt
I have all three of those BK pups, and love them. The MM was a surprise for me. I ordered them for another guitar, but wanted to see what the Zebra pups looked like in a late 80's RG570. It made the basswood come to life, but I don't think that's what they were designed for. :dunno:

Dude those three BK pickups are my absolute favs…really can’t go wrong with em

Miracle Man just has some magic to it that I cannot put in words…just gotta play it to feel it

yeah man, that was around 2009, and they are still in the guitar to this day. The guitar they were for got sold, lol. 🤣

I've tried almost the entire line-up of BKP's and found them for my taste too sterile and 2D, lacking nuance or what I perceive as soul/character. MCP's are better, but imo overrated and WCR's (also tried almost the entire line-up) are very good for the price and recent made pickups, but IME weren't on the same level of my preferred, comparable vintage pickups that can generally be found for around the same price or even less for some like the Schaller's

I tried a newer Super Distortion and Norton in one of my Norlin LPCs and wasn't getting along with them. I ended up going with t-top replicas in the guitar, but would second the Duncan Custom recommendation if you want some chunk. Gibson also recently came out with a single-ceramic Dirty Fingers pickup that looks interesting, or maybe the 70s tributes.

The m6s are so clean and tight . Impossible to sound bad

lundgred m6s on this guitar ? Holy shit
Yeah they're the one non-vintage pickup I use. They may be a bit modern for him or some guys here though, hard to say. Definitely not what I'd use for '80's stuff. My preferred vintage highoutput pickups are still more organic/alive sounding, but don't have the unique voicing of the M6. No one talks about it, but they're also some of my favorite cleans and the neck pickup is equally great where it shines for liquid-y leads. If nothing else, a hell of lot better than BKP's imo and a much more interesting voicing. You bring up a good point. I never tried M6's in a Les Paul. It could be very cool

I've been on a WCR Godwood and ToneNerd Psykes kick as of late.
