Richedie, if you decide to try a distortion do yourself a favor and check out the Xotic BB Booster. I went through a LOT of OD/Dist pedals before I discovered that the Xotic pedals LOVE Egnater amps. They really work well. I discovered this in my single channel module days. I was looking for something to add the B channel on the cheap. The Xotic line is cool. has a Bass and Treble EQ and they work well as just an EQ/Booster. Then you add the feature that you can "fade in" additional gain with the gain knob. You can run these in front of a full out raging high gain sound and still make it work. It just steps it up one more notch.

Thanks bro, I do like the idea of just an EQ though and love the Monte Allums Boss GE7. With the Monte Allums mod, it is basically true bypass, quiet and works so well. I haven't tried it with the MOD 50 however.
Now you have me wondering about the BB. I want to be able to boost a touch of bass and mids like johns states for some leads.

What module did you use? I am trying to get away from boosting with gain. These amps are already gainy.

Rich,

Have you got your EG5 yet , from all i've read I would wait and just see it maybe fine for leads on the b channel

I am still waiting. :(

I know what you mean but I have specific tastes for lead tone. The gain may be perfect and compression but I like it EQed with more bass and mids so I am taking a page from John's book and getting a Monte Allums modded Boss GE7 for a front boost. This way I can have A and B set for different gain levels and maybe use my volume knob less. We'll see.

John, you the man! I thought a little bit of gain boost would add compression and I could get some mids at the same time from a tube screamer. A buddy of mine uses a compressor into his Marshall....but the more I thikn of it...a good trensparent EQ into the front to alter the frequencies hitting the amp is the way. You can't get better than a moddified GE7 from Monte Allumes.

I use the BB mostly in front of the SL channel B. I also use a EG3/4

Thanks man! I'll look into that or an EQ like John uses. I know a modded TS-9 or SD-1 is good but with the MOD...not sure. My goal is a little more midrange and less highs for leads....to stand out and sound thick.

I love the BB Preamp. I use it to boost a clean or semi dirty tone to get to the Andy Timmons style "Resolution" tone and also my high gain modules some times for solos. Its a really smooth OD. Seems to work great with the Eggie stuff. Very musical feedback too actually.

After John's comments, I have decided to grab a SL. I got the bassman, but didn't care for it as much compared to the T/D. It was a bit dark for my tastes, and didn't have any tones I felt I couldn't get in another module. I just love my T/D, and the bassman just didn't stack up to it in my opinion. I am more of an "eric johnson" clean tone type of guy anyway, so the Bassman was cool to try, but something I don't think I'd use at all.

So, onto the SL. I'm excited to see how it differs from the SL based on what John had to say.

I get one next week :).

Well if you like Twin and Deluxe style clean don't be expecting anything that clean out of the SL. The clean in the Bassman is cleaner than the the SL. Like I was saying great non master volume style Marshall tones TO DIE FOR, great with pedals and in between type overdriven semi clean sounds. Not in the same ball park as a T/D.

Oh man, I am not expecting that at all ;). I just decided the only clean tones I need are the T/D and VX. The bassman just didn't "do it for me."

But I did want a more classic marshall tone, to be able to get those violin type tones like Eric Johnson (as close as I can get) with good fuzz pedal. Sorry if I made it seem that the SL was a replacement tonally for the bassman. It was more of direction change. I now know that the T/D is the clean tone for me, with a VX in close 2nd. I wanted to be able to get more of that old school plexi vibe, which none of the modules I have now really do at all (closest is SL2, but I would imagine a comparison to the SL would give the SL2 a bit more compressed sound (ala JCM 800, which it does very well). I was wanting to get into the lower / medium gain marshall tones.

 Then you're on the right track. Just making sure I didn't steer you wrong.

Crap guys.......I just got my SL and WTF??!! Why isn't this module talked about more??

Holy cow, what great tone!! Of course I'm not "really" surprised, but damn this thing kills. I can get it really quite clean with my strat and it goes up to that hard rock crunch where I could just play power chords all day. Tone tone tone........

I can see why John loves this thing.......add a pedal or two and you really can do it all. Can't wait to add some pedals with it. I was pounding out some old Rush stuff and old Heart when Roger Fisher used those Plexi's. Add some chorus and an EQ or O/D pedal and yummy

I think the next gig my consist of the SL and SL2 or EG5.

Jeff hurry up with that E2...... :D

I can't wait to join you here :). My SL is on the way. I can't wait to see how it compares to the COD, EG3/4, and SL2 :).

I'll be curious to hear your impressions of it.

I should get it wednesday or thursday. I'll definitely let you know!

I thought the BMan had better clean than the T/D but aybe I needed more time with the T/D. To me the chanel B of the BMan had me sold though because I could get convincing JTM45 tones! :)

For me, I like more of a high headroom sparkling clean tone, which is exactly what the T/D is for me. I felt I could get the channel B sounds "close enough" with other modules like the COD, etc, so I just didn't feel the need to keep it. Secondly I would imagine the SL can get some pretty good JTM / Plexi tones ;).

Hi Eric! I know what you mean about the higher headroom. Sometimes I find the BMan can lack the headroom and I need to crank the channel A for clean but it seems fine once I adjust the others to taste. Eventually I'll pick up a Deluxe module. It can be limiting because I need to keep the channel volumes low for the high gain.

Since I have a MOD 50, I need the clean and the JTM 45 type tones in the same module because my other module needs to be a high gain module like the SL2, EG3/4 or EG5. You can get away with that with the M4.
I might be interested in that new extension when availabloe for the MOD 50. I prefer a simple amp head these days and hardly any effects.

I see you have a reverb tank? Can they make that mod for me if I send in my MOD 50? Do you have a footswitch for it or is it either on or off all the time?

Thanks man!

The reverb tank is mounted to the front face of the amp (pretty much right behind where the egnater logo is). It basically sits in the parallel efx loop, so there's no switching it. For me, I use the Mod50 mostly for blues type gigs, so I'm planning on keeping my COD for in there, and either a T/D or a SL (depending on how I like it). I can dial back the gain on the Channel A of the COD to get a pretty clean tone, with a slight grit around the edges. The verb w/ that kind of tone is just plain awesome!!! I can't wait to try the COD w/ the SL. I would imagine they will fit very well together!
