I still like the GT E34Ls and JJs and I run them HOT!!!!No explosions or meltdowns  But the 6550s still RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
Uhhuh, yes and absolutely! We must be related.

I must have gotten bad tubes or something. I dont know. The 34Bs were really dark and fuzzy. Not nearly the amount of clarity I get from the 5881s. When I put the 5881s back in, it was like someone lifted a blanket off my cab. The 6550s have great clarity as well. They are just too sterile sounding for me.

5881's sound good for rhtyhm and clean but lack mids for lead to my ears and the guitar lives in the mids. :)

Well, here's my tone report from last night's gig. (first gig with the EL34s).

I love midrange. Don't get me wrong. But I think having the EG3/4, AND the EL34s, was just midrange overkill. And next to Matt's setup with the EG5 and 5881s, my setup just didn't have enough "cut" to it.

(if I was the only guitar player in the band, it would have worked great though).

Lucky for me... my SL2 just arrived 5 minutes ago  , so I will be using THAT at tonight's gig.

My prediction is that the SL2 will jive better with the EL34s, and mesh better with Matt's EG5/5881 tone.

Yep, the SL2 and EL34s are a nice mix! I was going to eventually get an E2 and use the EG3/4 for lead but am not so sure due to cut issues. The SL2 cuts fine and is less midrange heavy. My Erect also sounds great with EL34s. 5881s just lack too much midrange for any single note playing. Must be the EG3/4 that is the issue like with the MHG when playing with another guitarist. It certainly isn't an EL34 thing. I see plenty of bands where the Marshall/EL34 guy stands out more than the Rectifier/6L6 guy.

EG3/4 and EG/5 :no:The SL2 and EG5 are absolutely insane together!!!I had a friend come over and went threw the motions and started playing with combos and the EG5 and SL2 were BY FAR the most AWESOME sounding modules together!RThey cut into each other very nice and really complemented each other.2 EG5s didn't sound really well and 2 SL2s didn't work that great either but as soon as we got to this combo it was unbelievable,we went back a forth with leads and they cut threw very nice no matter were I stood!!!!!!!But again that"s me :D Greatest tones I've ever had period!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, it's definitely not an EL34 issue. agreed, rich. Usually, side by side, a Marshall will cut better in a band than a rectumfryer.

J-man, good to hear about that combo. Now I REALLY can't wait to play tonight!

Almost forgot, the amps............Mod100 with GTE34Ls and Svets6550s and the M4 with the same combo :D UNBELIEVABLE I TELL YA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!EGNATER RULZ

I dont know guys but Im just not buying the 5881s dont have enough mids argument. Im always running 5881s and between Nickand I, lets just say my amp is never the one fighting to be heard. Sometimes I dont even need to use my boost channel for leads. The EG5 cuts through like no other and has a lead tone to die for...and thats with 5881s.

I would say it's more module than power tube when overall tone is concerned but I like 6550s and that's final!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't see how 6550s could be sterile!!! You must not have had them running hot enough. But that's me :). My BMAN with 6550s is anything but sterile. It's friggin crunchy and warm. But that's me I guess.

I dunno man...i just can't see how a 6550 is "sterile"....I mean...hell...SRV used them in his Dumbles...and that's one of the best sound amps I've ever heard recorded. I feel they are the most responsive, warm, and crunchy with no harshness. I do agree with Matt on the 5881s though. I like those tubes too. I like the EL34bs too. I think they all have something for everyone. But everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I was running at 45 or 48? Jason, what did u tell me to run them at? I forget.

I bet SRV had his amp CRANKED. Maybe I didnt get mine loud enough.

I run mine at 48-50. But I've never really had to crank my amps to get killer tone. They do sound better loud :)
