Does anyone know what Prince was using around his Purple Rain - Sign o' the Times era? Was it just anything that was at hand, or did he have a preferred setup around this time?

Cheers!

boss pedals for nearly everything back then. jc120 too…..

Man Prince is such a monster player. I play in a band that just does large corporate event and we sometimes pull out "Let's Go Crazy". LOVE playing those leads. Tasty and fun.

Boss pedals and Mesa Mark IIC+..... He had a pretty elaborate switching rig. But this was most of what he was using then.

Personally I do not think there is a better guitar player alive and have tried to get in his band a few times.

If you want to find out about him you want to go here...

Some extremely lucky dude found one of Prince's Mark 2C+ Coliseum heads at a small shop in Mpls early this year. Its marked 'Prince 2' on the chassis. Wow. Not only is it a C+ Coli but one of Princes....maybe not Hetfields but still collectable and iconic. I read this on the boogie board.

Always been a big Prince Fan. Dont listen to him daily but when the mood hits. Nothing better. ;)

Agree. Very underrated player. I never knew he was using Mesas back then. Interesting

During that time he came off the road and was selling his leopard skin mesa combo's at the music store I frequented. He also purchased the BC rich mocking bird I traded in and had the store send it to Dean Zelinsky to paint it purple for a movie shoot. He ended up not using it and had the lyre one made At Knut Koupe Music in MPLS. I never saw or met him but its weird knowing he bought my guitar.
A guy on my bowling team has yearbook pictures of Prince when they played basketball together at a Mpls High School.

I worked with Madonna on the Who's that Girl tour..... She is pretty small and called him the midget.

I can say with extreme confidence that Mesa/Boogie made prince two custom Mark IIC+ Coliseums for his Purple Rain tour. Both amps started off as Mesa/Boogie Mark IIB Coliseums and were later modified to Mark IIC+ Coliseums. One was actually discovered in a small shop. They actually say "Prince 1" and "Prince 2". The inside story was that Prince was auditioning several guitar techs and would often dismiss them constantly because they weren't getting a decent tone. After many guitar techs were dismissed, prince contacted Boogie to have them make some amps that would sound the way he wanted them. It turns out that one of the cabs was wired in series and the other cab was wired in parallel. Mike B was flown out and discovered the impedance issues.

Now that's badass.

Geezus... Such tiny hands - and big tones with some serious feel. Didn't even realize.
