Always been a big Prince Fan. Dont listen to him daily but when the mood hits. Nothing better. ;)

THIS!!!

I dig Prince once in a while but I can't pretend I care for his guitar tones. His voice has nice tone when he sings in lower registers.
Don't care for 90% of his songs. They're as fruity as he dresses. Those outfits were terrible. Made it hard to watch. I don't think he wears that girly stuff anymore. He's too old.
Anyway.

"Stupid sexy Flanders" springs to mind reading this. Are you SURE you don't like his outfits? :P

Thanks for the info, guys, never thought he'd be a Boogie user tbh, I always thought it sounded like a clean Fender with a BOSS distortion or something.

I always hear this yet I still have yet to hear him play anything that makes me think he's a monster player. People drooled over him playing on While My Guitar Gently Weeps and I thought his playing was typically average but non-guitar players would obviously have been blown away because he was moving around onstage dressed like a 4 foot pimp.

I couldn't agree more...any hack lead guitarist could have done anything he did in that jam, yet players were fawning all over his performance. I too have never heard him play one damn thing that made me think he was anything more than a competent player. I'm open to check anything out that you little purple nut-swingers think is "monster player" worthy.

Beyond that, I lost all respect for him after the Kirk Douglas debacle...what a POS he is as a person.

+1

His lead playing is OK..... I am rarely impressed by anyone's lead playing. Try playing some of his rhythm stuff accurately.

little purple nut swingers? i like that. been a fan since the beginning. if you don't like it-hey, you don't like it. but i would rather watch or listen to him than 99% of these instrumental guitar geek "WANKFEST" albums. His performance and playing blew me away. however, I will admit that I am pretty easy to impress. you do have to admit-that was pimp as fuck.

Soldano recently built Prince a few custom "pedal platform" amps which he loves (according to Mike Soldano).

I love Purple Rain but kinda fell off after that album. There were a few cool songs but some of it got old after he changed to the symbol. I saw him in concert....hands-down one of the best live shows I've ever seen. EVER.

Funny story...after the concert we scored some VIP passes to a club Prince went to. When he came in we were in a line that was about 4 people deep...in walks 2 GIANT body guards. Like NFL giant. They walked past and we were like "WTF? Where is he???" Prince was nowhere to be seen. We couldn't see him when he came in because he was about a foot shorter than all the people in front of us in line   :D

Years ago in Mpls my brother was at a club and was asked to move because "he can't see". My brother stands about 6'2 and he turned around and 2 large bodyguards were standing in front of Prince. Mike told them " he needs to move then"....

Agreed. He is an entertainer and has some cool tunes but I do not see him being able to play "anything". . He plays pentatonics mostly and is a good player but I always saw him as a bit loose on the picking hand. I can appreciate this and his style but in no way is this close to anyone of the greats we regularly blow our loads over here on RT. I listen to him for the enjoyment of hearing him but he has never totally blown me away with his lead playing. Let's be honest here. Tone always sounded smothered in effects too.

Clueless.

Would of been funny if your brother said "well put the little guy up on your shoulders so he can see"

Never cared for his music, but that is just a matter of taste. What I don't get are all of the " Monster Player " comments. Especially coming from an online guitar community. Every time one of these Prince threads pop up, I see it and think " okay, this is a joke. Right? " But then I read the comments and think " Did I miss something ? " So I end up going to youtube to see if I can find any video evidence confirming that Prince is a " Monster Player, and I come up empty. His performance on While my guitar gently weeps is fucking awful. All showboat and flailing of hands with a sprinkle of shitty playing thrown in.
Entertaining performer I can believe, even though I don't care for him. I would have to rate his playing as mediocre. Its good enough for him to write his songs with. If I lowered my bar by half, he still wouldn't be peaking anywhere near " Monster Player " level.

Eric Clapton says he is the best guitar player also. For me it's the whole thing..... Producer, enginer, the bands, catalog, writer, etc...... It's not like he is Paco de Lucía or John McLaughlin or one of the various players. More like Jimmy Page when he was active.....

I'd have to agree. I've found him to be hugely overrated. I've never heard anything from him that was above average.
