I figured I had two issues......one with the EG5 and one with the amp. I'd even get little quiet pops through the speaker when biasing with all the controls on 0. So I went ahead and shipped the chassis and EG5 up for Bruce to check out. Must say I'm missing my amp badly though............ :aww:

Dude that SUCKS. Best of luck on a speedy recovery.

Bruce says that the screws for the transformer are just a tad long and were messing with the power supply. I think that since my transformers were bent a bit from the shipping, that may have helped the problem along. I also asked him to check out my EG5 due to the cutting out issue. Hopefully I'll have my baby back for next Friday's gig.

Did anyone get a definitive answer for this issue? I know this thread is super old, but I'm having the same problem on my MOD50. It's intermittent crackling. Actually I have a second issue too, but I don't know if the two are related to each other:

1. Intermittent crackling noise. Seems to only happen randomly and almost seems like it's at the end of a held note or chord. Doesn't happen all the time, just sometimes.
2. There is also a bunch of hiss/buzz noise until I touch the knob or bridge of my guitar. Thought this noise might be an issue with an open string ground on the guitar but that doesn't seem to be the case.

All tubes test OK, all cables OK.

Does anyone have suggestions? Do I need to send it to Bruce?

Hey Matt,
I thought you said you had resolved both issues. Bad tube was causing the fuzzy distortion and your guitar had an open string ground? Still have the problems?
Bruce

Any chance you could do a video demonstrating both problems?

Hey Bruce,

Thought I had too. Didn't want to bother you and/or monopolize your time, but I appreciate you posting back. What I thought was the string ground issue was, according to the Anderson folks, not the string ground (noise goes away when I touch any metal part on the guitar, not just the knob). That buzz/hiss is still there and I have no idea what's causing it.

The other issue is, evidently, not a bad tube. I've tried it with a bunch of different tubes (that all tested good on our sound tech's maxi-matcher) and it still does it. But, again, it's intermittent, and thus much harder to predict or reproduce. Perhaps the two issues are related?

I'll try to make a video and demonstrate the hiss/buzz certainly and, if I can get it to do the other rattle thing, I'll try to capture that as well. My kids are asleep now so I'll have to do it tomorrow, but I'll post it when I do. Thanks much.

I got called up to play so I'm on the road until this weekend. I'll post video when I get back.

Has anyone considered that it could be tube socket(s)? Sometimes retensioning the connectors works wonders. Some tubes' pins are smaller than others and might not make good contact in loose socket connectors.

I found that I'd get "crackling" occasionally if the two thumb screws that secure the modules to the chassis aren't tight (grounding issue?). So that's something simple you can check.

Hey all, sorry for the delay...I've been out touring for the last few weeks. I did figure out the noise issue though...at least, one of them. The hissing/buzzing noise turned out to be a new appliance on another outlet on the same circuit as the outlet my amp was plugged into. No joke...other part of the house, my wife bought some kind of lamp thing to cure nail polish, and that was causing a noise issue for my amp on the same outlet I've always used it on with no noise. Fortunately, we have a good friend who is an electrician who was able to narrow it down. Weird, but glad it's not my amp or guitar. I'd still think using a line conditioner (which I was) should solve these kinds of issues, but apparently not.
