Problem with EVH Flanger

I have this pedal and everytime i use it in my FX loop of my amps (marshall JVM and Mesa Mark III) i get a significant volume drop, also other people seem to have a similar problem too after doing a bit of re-seearch.

I dont think it sounds that good infront of the amp, i like the more "polished" sound of it in the FX Loop.

Anyone else have this issue?

Also, looking at ditching and moving on, i like the look of the TC Vortex. TC make great stuff. Any recomendations?

Make sure you're running it at 18 volts. . .and it's really designed to go in front. Sounds awesome, big, fat, and full!

Man, I would not put that unit in the loop.... it's an out front pedal for sure.

Oh reallly! Maybe thats where i'm going wrong. I am running it at 18V but still have the volume issue with it in the loop, infront its fine.

I love my Phase 90 in front.

So much for "time based effects in the loop", seems like most poeple like phaser, flanger, chorus, etc.. infront.

My 2 cents is that the amount of gain should determine the placement.


I loop it, and live with the drop.

I use mine out front. I had the same issue with it in the loop...I think it's an impedance problem. The MXR Phaser and Flangers are kind of weird that way...even using it out front I had to use a buffer because of the tone loss I'd get from these things even when bypassed. I think the hassle is worth it for the tone (at least for the Flanger! I love that pedal out front!)

The "time based effects in the loop" is true in most cases but is also just a rule of thumb since there's no right or wrong, just what sounds best to each player. The original grey box MXR flanger which the EVH flanger is based on was designed before FX loops were common so it was designed to be used out front. Ed used his original grey flanger out front and when they designed the new signature flanger with his "EVH" button added to that original circuit it was also designed to be used out front. Hence the volume drop when it's in the loop since it's not built like a modern flanger which could be based around being used in a loop. Same goes for all the variations of the phase 90 including the EVH version, better out front.
