So this past week I got a Proco Rat 2 and a BD-2 to toy with. Both Morbid Angel and Obituary used a Rat with Marshalls so I figured I could get an approximation of their tones with either my marshall or the crunch channel in my Orthos. Neither amp is producing what I would consider usable tones with the rat. Any of you guys use them? What would be good starting points?

i was searching for the same stuff days ago, i found Trey settings:

Yeah having the distortion knob barely on is the key. Don’t turn it all the way down like an TS since that’ll choke the signal.

Perfect!!! Thank you guys so much!

On a side note I got a pretty close Obituary tone with the Blues Driver. I've never considered using a BD-2 until watching a pedal demo replicating My Bloody Valentine. I'm not really familiar with their work except for "Sometimes" although I like Boris' version a lot better.

I think I'm going to grab something like an Eyemaster or something similar for an Entombed type sound. I typically never use distortions/fuzzes etc other than clean boosts so this is fairly new territory for me

Trey used/uses a RANE ME30. I think he's now using a MXR 10 band Kerry King EQ. There was some old pics on the googles of Trey cutting him arms before his gig (very KVLT).. anyway it shows his rig and the RANE Eq settings, basically a mid hump it appears to be. Not sure what brand of Razors he uses though.

RD2U -> EQ -> JCM900

Not sure about Obituary and Trevor Peres gear though, there is a good Youtube video that he does a rig rundown if you want. The mix on Cause of Death certainly had the Snare pushed up though the roof.

The Morbid Angel guys used to stay in Charlotte. Kirk from Buzzoven was posting about Richard Brunelle dying and was mentioning that he seemed like a nice guy but never really got to talk much cause "the guitarist who wanted to be a 400 year old vampire wouldnt shut the fuck up". I love Trey's playing but yeah he always seems like the kid who tried to hard to be weird in school.

I saw Obituary a few years ago and it snowed or iced or something and there wasnt hardly anyone at the show. Trevor was the only guitarist with them at the time so everything was without guitar solos. I stood right in front of him and was impressed with his minimalist set up. All those guys found their sound and stuck with it over the years. I never realized how punk Obituary are. But I guess being in a small club with 20 people would make anyone sound a bit raw.

My favorite death metal band is Carcass and I guess they are using the EVH 5153's now but Im not sure if they are using the Guv'nor with them. I saw a pic from their studio a few months back and they had a 5150, a 5153, and a plexi with the guv'nor.

Its nice to see these guys on the other end of the gear purchasing spectrum.

Typically I set my amp point of breakup or medium gain crunch when using a RAT.

If you set the amp clean put all knobs at 1 o'clock on the RAT is a good place to start.
