What brand of EL34's are you guys running in your PT100's?

**Updated

Mine has the ARS branded JJ Tesla for the power tubes. This is what Suhr put in. I will have to look at the pre tubes. They are also ARS branded but not sure what they are.

I can't wait for my PT100! My SE+ is just being delivered to Suhr today. Now I wait weeks

Trust me it will be worth it. You will NOT be disappointed.

How does the PT-100 compare to the Soldano SLO or JCM 800?

I have only played the SLO100 for a short while. A couple of very basic opinions... The clean channel on the PT100 is one of the best on any channel switcher I have ever played. It seems to me there is more gain on tap on the PT100. The SLO100 was a bit brighter as I recall (however the PT100 can get pretty bright with the bright switch and presence controls). I was able to dial in more bottom end on the PT100 using the whomp and feedback. The factory SLO seemed to be lacking in the low end department (I may just have not had enough time to play with it). In general there seem to be more options on the PT100 for a wider tonal range. Just my perceptions based on limited exposure to the SLO100.

I have never really played with a JCM800 so I cannot comment.

I see. I used to own an SLO - great tone, but too bright, mediocre master volume, lacking bass, annoying fx loop, etc. It was a tone machine though. I was never too impressed with the OD100 amps, but I guess the PT100 sounds nothing like that line.

I have had limited time and my opinion is nothing compared to people like Pete Thorn, etc.... But here are my initial thoughts.

First the only complaint I have!

I wish they would send out an updated manual for the PT100 as well as with information on the Feedback, Whomp controls. I understand what they do so this did not bother me much, but I could see how somebody who is not familiar with these controls would be at a bit of a loss.

The clean channel is pristine, it has a nice chime like a fender type clean, but can also get a real raunchy Marshall like clean as well. With gain pedals I could use this channel only if I needed to. Very impressive.

Channel 2 has a very woody characteristic. Reminds me of the Bogner Ecstasy Blue channel with more gain and more upper mids. Not as dark of mids so I figure in band context this amp will sit in the mix really well. That is still to be seen this week.

Channel 2 with Level3/Gain3 on - Same voicing but more gain and a bit more of a liquid feel because of it. Great for soloing and compliments channel 2 really well in transition.

Very open sounding amp with compression that does not seem to take away from the dynamics. Can get very nasty sounding and pissed off sounding really easily if one wants. Also on Channel two with Bright engaged and gain rolled back can get a really nice Plexi type tone.

Overall I am very impressed so far. It seems to capture all the favorite pieces of the amps I have owned and could very well satisfy all my tonal needs. The amp is also very quiet at loud volumes with plenty of gain. Even when messing around with my AC Boost the noise level was not bad at all.

I will post some clips and maybe a video or two if I can work anything up to do the amp justice.

Thanks to all the guys at Suhr for all their help. And thanks Chris for answering my questions throughout the process!!

Your opinion carry's as much weight as anybody's!! Gald the amp arrived safely..Enjoy!!!!

Oh yeah.....Manuals are for pussy's.......lol!!! :D ;)

How does the PT-100 compare to the Soldano SLO or JCM 800?

I've owned all 3- the PT100 has far and away the best cleans of any channel switcher I've ever seen so I won't compare to either the SLO or JCM800. ttosh gave a good description.

To me, the JCM800 is kind of a one trick pony- cool trick but that's all it really does. The SLO has more available tones, but it's that one screaming lead tone (Gary Moore Blues Alive for me) that is it's trademark sound and no one has done it better or quite the same. But... as has been mentioned, the Normal channel was kind of bland and the fx loop sucks.

Channel 2 on the PT is very Marshall-esque to me. It's very open with a lot of upper mid bite. You can get anywhere from JMP to souped up JCM800 tones out of it. The boost (channel 3) is voiced slightly differently- a little more compressed and syrupy. There's also an internal trim pot to adjust gain levels on Ch. 3.

A member of another forum came over to A/B the PT100 with his SLO and you can dial in the PT very close to what the SLO does best- add Whomp and a few EQ tweaks and you're there- but the SLO can't cover the range of tones that the PT can.

All said, the JCM gives you one good tone. The SLO gives you 2 options- one of them is great.
The PT100 gives you three strong channels, all very useable and all with the flexibility to cover almost anything you want to play. YMMV.

Bill: Do you find the PT100's overdrive channel to be as organic and sweet in the midrange as the SLO overdrive?

Not sure I can describe it accuartely, but the mids on a SLO cover a wider frequency range while the PT100 seemed to be narrower and more upper mid focused than the SLO. That's why we ended up kicking in the Whomp to get the SLO tone. But the top end of the PT is rounder and not as harsh as the SLO either. I had both amps for about 5-6 weeks and A/B'd them a lot. Can the PT100 nail the SLO lead tone? No but it can get pretty damn close. But it has so much more flexibility that it wasn't a tough choice.
