Alrighty a couple years back I had to sell my baby because I started a new job and needed money to get me through the rough spots starting out. Recently I've smoothed out the edges and want to get back to playing out and possibly touring here and there. My question is axe fx 2 or get back into a diezel... I absolutely LOVED my vh4 and the Hagen is really tempting me mainly because I haven't tried it and it's cheaper new then a vh4... I don't like buying used really and I'm sure Pete would appreciate that as well seeing as that's his business :). Practicality tells me axe fx 2 because of weight/effects/amps/cabs all in one unit but it just seems you can make it more personal and unpredictable with a real amp which I prefer. So can someone make a good clip of the Hagen. I'll e honest the ones out there... Not so great, sorry. I know Reza has or had both can you make a video with repeating riff going back and forth between their channels so I know which one I want to aim for? Peter you really need to make a company demo of your amps with tonal comparison utilizing a base riff for each channel. Somebody made a video with vh4/Herbert/Hagen/Schmidt but they're just going thru a song and the damn riff changed almost every time an amp changed, you could hear differences but not clear because of this... Sorry if you're on here but not the best way to do a comparison vid.

Also I would like to add what I hear of the Hagen is promising extremely so, just the vids I've seen of it are not so great. Like for instance in Reza's vids there an inherent farty muffled low end charteristic but AMAZING MID RANGE SWIRL AND GROWL when he lets the chord ring. I need to know if that's just from how he recorded it or if that may be kinda how the amp is.

From what I can tell the vh4 has a clearer more immediate low end which is paramount to me but the Hagen has more
Bloom and growl which is also something I'd love to have. If I had enough money I'd just buy both and run them together hahaha! :P

Dude - I have done a whole Song just with this very amp.
Look at Peter's homepage for the audio-player and listen to "Comfort" by Eden Circus. That's all Hagen/Vintage 30 RL/SM57/API...

The feel/response, tone/depth/complexity, clarity and versatility (the list goes on) of a Diezel completely destroys an AxeFX for me. Yeah, it is convenient, but that seems to come with some scrafices. That is just my opinion. I like the AxeFX for its effects like delay, reverb, chorus, etc... but I can get nice effects from other units that just do effects.

Hey niilz, I dig! I REALLY like the tone but there's still something about the lows that bugs me, hiw do you set up your amp, scooped/nuetral/or mids pushed? Just trying to gather what I can because there's no way to try one before buying around here. Have you played or owned a VH4 before, how does it compare to you if so, that would help a lot. I'm probably just going to have to be patient and wait till the next month and just buy a vh4 I'm feeling, haha. I want to try this Hagen tho.

Like my dilemma is I love about 95% of what I hear of the Hagen ...I actually think it has the most unique voicing out of the line but what I'm hearing in the low end I don't know if I can dial how I like or not. Can't be sure if it's just something inherent to the amp... Not neccessarily bad but not what I'd consider ideal either. I know it sounds like I should just go with vh4 because I've owned it and loved it but I really dig this voicing of the Hagen minus the one issue.

I bought a Hagen after A/B-ing it with a VH4. Eventually I added the VH4 to my line up but then realized the Hagen really delivered the tones for me. So I traded my VH4 for a 2nd Hagen. I now own 2 Hagens and will be buying another VH4 with 6550s to run with one of the Hagens and be in Tonal Heaven!!!

I had a Hagen, did a bunch of recordings that you can check in my channel. Here is a demo of all the channels. Eq's at noon in the amp and very little post eq:

Have also a recording with the channel 4 of VH4 that I own now (only channel 4 used here):

These are direct to DAW recordings using a dummy load (power amp signal from amp) and cabinet impulses, but the most of the amps character is there.

What can I say about both is: there's a considerable difference in the front end of the notes (the picking response). The Hagen has a more complex response to picking than the VH4 which is more direct. The Hagen's picking response is slower and a bit more dynamical. With low gain pickups the VH4 has some snap in its picking response (that I die for) but still full bodied (hard to put this in words). The mid range is fairly different: the Hagen has a lower frequency centered mid range when compared to the VH4, which makes the Hagen less bright and bitty in a mix than the VH4. Overall the VH4 records better than the Hagen but you can get a killer sound out of both. I would resume this as VH4 - Cruch and classic sounding vs Hagen - Kerrang and a brute beast. From my experience if your gassing for a VH4 the Hagen will not replace it in and sooner or later you will buy the VH4. On the other hand the Hagen is also a great sounding amp. Buy both!

Thanks so much^ exactly what I needed to hear... Definitely can't afford both right off the bat but sounds like I'll be getting another VH4, I know exactly what you mean in your description and I loved it!

Man I listened to those videos on my monitors you posted up prof freak and damn it, now I'm conflicted! Hahaha, there's still something about that midrange bloom to the Hagen that's catching my ear, damn! I think if I had it in front of me I could get MY sound out of it for sure. I think I'm going to have to gamble and just try it. The second channel of the Hagen sounds AWESOME in that vid dude!

I would say if you have a chance to play one do so. I know that is a well duh statement but I did have a chance to do that. Music go round here in Milwaukee has the hagen, 4 and dmoll. I am not sure if they all carry them but it would be worth making some calls if you have one in your area.

I don't :/ the only place that carried diezel around here only has a Herbert and hasn't ordered any new ones since that douche in Georgia that screwed over everyone including peter and peter left them with a bad taste... Last I heard that's why anyway. They offered to give me a good deal on that Herbert and while I owned two different Herbert's I just really dug the vh4 WAY more but I'm
Über curious about Hagen. Just going to have to take that chance the way it looks. That midrange bloom is sounding killer, just hope I can tweak the other thing closer to what I like.

Give Bert (manager of Music go Round) a call here in Milwaukee. Good guy and he is here on the forums.

Thanks for making me want to add a Hagen with my VH4 even more now...

Good recordings man!

I have a nice Einstein combo for sale if interested. In excellent shape w some extras n goodies too.

Thanks guys! :)

I will re-record the first Hagen clip but with the VH4. Same variables: daw, impulses, guitar, amp eq etc.

That vh4 video is not really a fair comparison with the Hagen one because I only used the channel 4 of the VH. Just have to find some time to do it. Lets see...

But yes the Hagen is a great amp. Channel 2 it's probably my fav.

Sorry Pauly, not even remotely interested in the Einstein, great sounding amp but the layout doesn't work for me. Plus I like to buy new. Thanks tho bud!

I will be selling my back up Hagen. Has never been gigged and still in its plastic wrap. I can happily put you in touch with James Leader who is the UKs Diezel representative who can asure you that the amp was bought as a back up to my main Hagen.

PM if interested :)

https://youtu.be/49JT5vB8mFQ THAT IS THE SOUND... Thank you Peter Stapfer. I don't mean any offense to anyone but why in the world are you guys getting this amp to sound so different then this? That's the low end character I was hoping I could get out of it and it has that mid range specialness I've been liking!!! Next amp for sure!!!! Either Peter is there a special trick to getting this sort of attack out of it because the muffled one seems to be the norm with everyone?
