Hopefully I'll get to hear it. Those are great amps! All you need is a little OD or boost up front.

Yeah, just a little boost. I tried using the same settings on the BB with the JCM800 that I use with the SL's and with the JCM800 it had way too much gain. Keep in mind that I still have the PPIV master in it, so I can still get a TON of gain at TV volume. :2thumbsup: :m17:

After playing the Marshalls the past few weeks, I have gotten use to their feel and can play them again. When I play a boogie, it seems like I added 5 years to my playing

Yeah... not sure how your 2204 is compared to the SL's but alot of the 2203/2204's were a bit more scooped and aggressive than my SL. Marshalls are good excersise... aren't they!?

Mine is def aggressive stock. I wish it had an effects loop though. I may end up putting one in, but mounting a tube on the inside and using a speaker out for a stereo jack and making a single stereo cable to complete the loop, this way I dont have to drill the shit out of it. Then again, I may just drill a few holes ;)[/quote]

Youl know what's even better than an FX loop? A wet/dry rig. You won't need to drill any holes and you have cabs coming out of your ass! LOL! :D

Just get a load box or hotplate (loadbox is probably cheaper and better) then run one output to your rack the other straight to a cab. If I had all your cabs, I'd do that in a flash!

You're not alone dude.

I must have modded my 82' JCM 100w at least 3 times ( gain/pream) and 7 years ago I made it all stock except for the EL34's and tube buffered effects loop specificaly caliberated for my echoplex's. I had Jeff Snider from Snider Amps (local guy) do some voice tweaking based off my requirements. But no added gain. I either run the ts808, BB preamp or Grey DOD 250 for added boost ,am i'm using mostly HS-3's or Virtual Vintage 54's. I have a 79 JMP 100W set up exactly the same and even the both of those circuits are the same , I like the 79 just a tad better at low volumes over the 800. But when that 800 is cranked, its a beast!

As much as I like the 800s standard circuitry, I prefer to install the X88R crunch into Marshalls (just did hat twice in a week for friends).

Plate V1A to 150k
Cathode 1.8k/1µF
thru 22nF and 330k into 500k gainpot (no C) to V1B

Plate V1B 100k
Cathode 2.2k with an optional 1µF for meat
thru a 4n7 to 10nF cap into 680k+330pF/330k ground and 220k stopper to the CF

The CF like a standard CF with a 1k cathode and a 1µF cap.

Once you're bored - try it :D

To me it sounds the correct amount meatier then the standard stuff - just an idea, you know . . .

After some thinking the past few days, I put back my 1983 JCM800 2204 back to stock specs except for the EL-34 mod and PPIV (Rich mod). I really liked how it sounded after my buddy Rich and I tinkered with it, but it was always a little bright. After trying a bunch of mods and values to add thickness, I got annoyed and put it to original specs (less EL-34s/PPIV ). To my surprise, it sounds really good, but really sounds killer with a SD-1, TS9 tube screamer or BB preamp.

I may have to bring it to the ampfest in a few weeks.

Hell,Bro, I'm impressed you got Buddy Rich to help you mod it!!!    Youve gotta bring it, Dave!!! I've got an 800 with a mod in it that was suppposed to be the precursor to the JCM 900, and I dont dig it. At all. If you do, I'll drag mine along for a goof...Id love to hear the differences, ya know??...

I was not too impressed intially with the BB but it is a really grt pedal. the OCD v.3 though is my favorite. more low end and just amazing touch response. BB is close but little more highs and mids. Still a great pedal.

Guys maybe you can help me. I love the tone form my 800 and MP but on leads I find it thin. the TSL I had was thicker becaue it was more naturally compressed. giving it a little fatter tone easier and cleaner.

I love the feel of my 800/JMP but is is noiser (I can deal with that) but not as thick/compressed like TSL or modern amps. Is there something I can do? Maybe use a compressor on leads?

Very cool. Thanks!

Would you use a pedal with this mod?
The average Rig Talker would of course :D

IMO most guys are looking for this edge/attack thing, which IMO is available with higher presence and a bit lower treble settings thru the EQ. The advantage of this circuitry is IMO that it sounds much meatier at low and medium volume levels - of course a standard 800s is awesome at higher levels, but not just because of the cap over the gain pot it sounds a bit thin at any other gain and volume levels.

I did this clip a while back with my guitar synth and YJM strat through a stock 800 into 72' marshall cab with greenbacks, but i'll post again for reference to your "thick" lead quest with an JCM800. I'm using just a DOD Grey 250 Overdrive boost ( which is both similar to BB and OCD but i think more transparent)..I think the overall effect is pretty thick and creamy sounding IMO...dont mind the flops in between it was done very quickly.

cheers

Great playing man! Wow! Great tone. Is that all neck?

Thanks man...I think I'm toggling here and there between bridge/neck as it is a habit I have..HS-3 bridge/YJM neck but mostly neck for soloing. I think thats what u were questioning? I added a delay as well to fattens things up post recording.

Had to take another listen nice! Ok how do you get that nice fat tone and I can't ha!!! How are you micking pic please!

So for starters I have my JCM voiced for a strat to really give some "ummmph". I don't know exactly what my guy does component wise, but it has something to do with bright caps. It has a complete stock gain sound and i just drive it with that vintage DOD 250 grey pedal which does fatten things up unlike a tube screamer which will compress an give a mid hump. I also run an old echoplex though the a loop thats faintly on to darken and fatten tone. Micking was done with my cabinet faced about 6 feet away from a wall and SM57 slightly angled to the outer part of the speaker. Amp has no presence turned on bass, treble mid are pretty 5-7 across the board. Preamp all the way up and Master at about 4.

Check out the Fulldrive 2 mosfet pedal, or if u can find and old DOD grey 250 at a good price, those are relaly transparent and great overdrives that will fatten the sound up. The BB preamp can be tweaked to do the same as well, but it's more of a distortion pedal ( like a modded Ibanez?maxon SD-9) vs. a true overdrive.

good luck!

LOL! Too bad I was say come over and work something out of my setup
