Putting an EQ in the Loop?

My friend just gave me a Boss GE7 eq pedal! I want to try this in the loop on my 6505. Here's my dumb question as I never use the loop in my amps. How do I run the eq pedal? Is it input on pedal to send and output on pedal to return? I've heard good things about running an eq in the loop of a 6505 and I want to try it soon, but I want to make sure I'm running the pedal in the loop correct. Thanks everyone.

I concur with everyone needing an eq pedal in the loop.

I've done it for years on multiple amps, some people will turn their noses up as "needing" an EQ indicates a flaw in the amp - my experience has been that even if you get a great core tone from an amp, an EQ gives options to shape the tone to something significantly different that you wouldn't be able to get otherwise.

GE7 can be a bit noisy/hissy, feed it with clean isolated power (if it came with a shitty AC adapter, try a 9V battery to see if that makes a difference). If you like it after trying, might want to explore some other model EQs, there are also upgrades/mods to the GE7 to lower the noise floor - Alchemy Audio, Analogman, DIY kits, etc. Good luck!

Hitting my mxr 10 band with all the sliders at unity still seems to add clarity to an amp. With peavey its damn perfect. I have a 6505+ that I'm trying to trade for a regular 05 bit the EQ in the loop will me standard

I use an Ashly pq16 six band, perfect for hitting 1.2k and others at the source instead of itb. I have a ge7 and a mesa 5 band that are cool too
Ashly would be cool to try . I been using the Empress lately but the boss 10 band advanced that was early 2000s is something I still pull out

Absolutely. I've also heard people say that if an amp "needs" an EQ then it's not a good amp, but I think that's garbage. The problem with this statement is that it implies there's another amp out there that does exactly the same thing as your current amp, but has an EQ section that's always magically in line with exactly what you want and always has the perfect control to fit it into every room and mix it will ever be in. That's absurd. These hypothetical amps don't exist.

EQs are amazing. I love em. Putting a Boss GE-7 at the input (and like you mention, clean power is necessary) gives you one of the most flexible boosts you can get, and for post EQ I go between an MXR 10-band, Mesa 5-band standalone, and an old Rane PE-17 5-band parametric EQ when I want to really get specific. If the amp is a non-master volume amp, I'll EQ the recorded track or even reactive load+IR's and it's always an improvement.

+ 1 on adding a graphic EQ in the loop. I add one on nearly every amp... pretty much what everyone else said, it adds shape to the tone to your playing a little more... really push the lows n cut the mids.

I’ll be the lone dissenter on the eq in a loop. The only time I thought it improved the tone was in a craptastic amp, a Randall RD100 Diavlo. I had a boss GE7. That was the only way for that amp to sound good imo. I’ve tried them in 5153s, Marshalls, Mesas…nice way to sculpt the tone but the overall sound suffered a bit. Most loops are tone suckers so that’s probably why I didn’t care for it.
But 90% of guys here love it…carry on!

To me it depends on the amp as well .

I will concur with this as well. I'm not really sure I like an EQ in the loop of my SLO30. I have really liked it on any other amp though.

I used one with my KSR Orthos and didn't like it but I used it with my Ares and really enjoyed it. Really like it with the Skeleton Key too.

I think for my purposes except with my 6505 I'm going to use it for leads.

I totally agree. While it does give you the ability to sculpt your tone, I wouldn’t say it improves it. IMO most amps will still have a better quality of tone without one in the loop.
