Question for RT2/50 Users

Hey, all -

I just received my RT2/50 as the first step towards building an M4 system. I'm wanting to check out the operation of the RT2/50 so I'll know if it's operative. (The inside shipping box was a little banged up.) I have a Pod XTL that I can run into the amp to get signal to it.

When the amp is in switching mode, is it necessary to run two speaker cabs, or does the amp default to the Channel 1 main speaker out if nothing is plugged into Channel 2 main speaker out? I want to make sure that the channels are switching OK.

Thanks!

I believe it defaults to channel 1 speaker out in switching mode. There should be a manual online at randalamplifiers.com

Thanks Ned. My amp came with a manual but it is not clear on that issue.

I just don't want to crank it up with no load on Ch2.

manual SUCKS!!!!!

I have 2 rt2/50s and run mono in and out in switching mode. The best sound out of that amp is full vol or maybe 98 percent then control your overall vol with the pre amp. If your ch A and ch B do not switch with midi (select preamp channel or module and then press and hold the selector switch for 3 sec, this will program that ch with that module or preset) then you have to open the top and find the midi board then flip the switches to one side. both of mine came like that.

Well, I'm already having too much fun.

Right out of the box the RT2/50 is blowing a fuse in Channel 2. I'll stop by the Radio Shack tonight for some fuses - hopefully there was just something transient going on. Otherwise I'll be driving to Dallas to the nearby authorized service shop.

Could be just a tube.Them things get rattled around in transit, and could happen to any amp.

Absolutely. But I'll let Randall buy the new tube for me. :)

A couple of more things about the RT2/50 while I'm irritated at it. ;)

As jlbaxe states, the owner's manual is horrible. I'd rewrite it for them for free if they'd let me. (For example, nowhere does it state specifically which of the power tube sockets correspond to which channels and fuses. Seems pretty elementary, since they have made it so easy to rebias the tubes...)

Randall needs to make some heads roll in the QC department at their Korean manufacturing plant. The screws that attach the front panel handles are about 1mm too long, preventing them from being fully tightened, resulting in loose handles on both sides. Also, as I was pulling one of the tubes last night, one of the screws that attaches the tube keeper fell right out of its hole because whatever it screws into has completely stripped threads. These things do not inspire confidence in the overall quality.

OK, rant over, this is an Egnater forum after all.

dont plug or unplug the midi on the amp unless it is turned off!!! I dont think it says that either but can blow out the midi board. Oh and try some Svet 6550 tubes :D in place of the 6L6's.

Do you mean these tubes http://tubedepot.com/so-6550we.html I have a used RT2/50 shipping soon and am looking to have new tubes on hand.

Any recommendations for EL34's for the second channel? I was thinking of Tung Sol EL34b, SED EL34 or Mullard EL34's.
I'm running GTE34Ls in the other half of the RT along with the Svet 6550s,I like
