Quick A/B clip: G&L Rampage vs Peavey Wolfgang

If I didn't know better I would think you were eluding to the fact that the G&L has a distinct Jerry Cantrell tone going on.........Even without the riffs I hear it in the tone regardless of the fact you are playing a Dual Recto....

I liked it better than the Wolfgang, the tones seemed more solid that way they sound and ring out.:unsure::2thumbsup::yes:
 
sounds great! Is that the new rampage? How do you like it? I almost got a tribute a few years ago but was worried about the Kahler.

I wasn’t intentionally doing that but I see what you mean. I expected the Rampage to sound like any other superstrat but it really doesn’t - has its own vibe going. Pretty muscular and full bodied. I find the Peavey to be a little more scooped with more lows and highs but lacking the mid push the G&L has.

Hey man yea it’s the new one. I’m digging it. Only had it a few weeks but so far I can’t put it down. Stock pickup is a little underpowered for my taste so that’s the only change I’ve made - threw in a kramer eruption pickup
 
G&L seems to sound a bit more authoritative and resonant/in your face. Also seems to have a low mid thing going on.

Wolfgang sounds exactly how I remember mine sounding - balanced top to bottom and nothing really out of balance sonically. That’s both a good and bad thing as it can sound bland to some ears or apologetic. I’ll say not all Wolfgang’s sound like that - I had one that sounded like this and another that sounded DARK and uninspiring.

I think you nailed it on your Wolfie take. Another thing that has to be mentioned is the neck - prob the most “worn in catchers mitt” feeling guitar I’ve played. I barely have to try to do anything which is a fun feeling. I could see how it would be too cramped for some poeple though.

I loved the fits like a glove feeling of my Wolfgang’s both in size and the neck. I actually liked my Wolfgang special more than my standard - so much in fact I wore the frets off of it and then sold it to a collector. I’ve tried finding another that sounded and played as good as that one even though it was a low end special with no luck.
 
I prefer the Peavey hands down. Way more aggressive and way more clarity. Just the first few big open chords and I already knew.

The G&L is much less focused, has a less clear low midrange and doesn’t have anywhere near the clarity. But that’s my thing. I prefer the overall clarity and string separation over the thicker sounds.

Funny story about that. The eruption that’s in the rampage is the same design. I liked the peaveys so much I reached out to Jim DeCola and asked what I could buy in the current market and he told me he designed the current eruption pickup to the same spec as the Peaveys.
