MURDERATOR
22 fret, 25.5” scale bolt on. I have always capo’d the first fret and pressed down behind the last fret- then measure string travel till the string touches the 7th fret. I don’t have any way to measure…and a fender heavy pick is to thick methinks…. What say you guys?

And what action distance do you guys prefer? 1 mm? .5 mm? Just curious…. Credit card is like 1 mm but that seems to much maybe.🤔

Usually press down where the neck and body meet ( neck through sorry). I don't measure the relief, as long as there is the smallest gap and things aren't fretting out or buzzing we're good

Same, i don't think actually measuring the action helps much - I set the truss rod to a tiny bit of relief, and take everything down until it buzzes and frets out, then raise the action until it doesnt.

different styles of guitars are wildly different feeling even with the same "measurement" of the action, so I feel like it's kind of superfluous to measure it IMO

I really need to invest in a few tools. With kids and grandkids my stuff has a tendency to disappear.

Dude, yes, you do

Having proper guitar tools around is one of the best investments I've ever made - just in doing side hustle work for other people around town, the tools have paid for themselves 10 times over.

Shit, just the fret tools paid for the rest 10 times over

I also have a tendency to over complicate things sometimes as well. Always before if it works it works….when I start trying to overthink things is when shit gets complicated.

You think one of those set up kits on Amazon would be good?

Any of you guys prefer a higher action? The last guitar I bought was professionally set up and the first thing I did was raise the action.

a lot of the guys on here making suggestions are right one. Don't necessarily need to measure, just make sure there is a tiny bit of relief and it isn't fretting and buzzing out. Having said that .010 mm is the right measuring thickness for that. Just go to amazon and buy a guitar set up kit for cheap and you'll be good.
