So this day starts in a terrible way.
Just found out that my old teacher (one of the founding fathers of MI, and scariest Fusion player and teacher) Don Mock passed.

I met Don shortly after I moved from LA to Seattle, must’ve been 94.
He gave a workshop at a store there, was like a group lesson once a week for a while.

A mutual friend helped convincing him to give me private lessons. Which is very much what shaped me more than any of the guys a I learned from.

Later on while I was still living in Seattle we shared a weekly gig in this hip performance space in Georgetown (don’t remember the name) his trio on Tuesdays, my quartet on Thursdays and we’d go and check out each others gig.

Don hated the business and pretended part, but he loved giving advise, hacks, info…he was the music nerd supreme.
He also had a huge impact on guys such as Paul Gilbert and Scott Henderson.

Never got the speed boat thing though 🙂

Anyways R.I.P. Don

Sorry to hear, condolences. I remember seeing and hearing of him while at GIT. Ripping playing in that video.

That sucks. Went to several clinics of his at RMI, and all those videos and DVDs he's been a part of...

I learned a lot from Don, RIP.

I just discovered that guy last year (sadly). What a killer player! Sorry for your loss. I have been listening to him ever since. Guy was amazing.

Condolences. He was one of "the" guys back in the 80's that brought guitar instruction into the modern age - a huge upgrade from the old Mel Bay books.
yes - I'm ancient.

RIP

Don Mock, Scott Henderson, Tommy Tedesco, Charlie Fector. Those were the biggest names running the show at G.I.T. in 1983 when I was there.

The school was upstair at the Hollywood Wax Museum on Hollywood Blvd. Every other teacher was a recognized well known master player with credentials walking down the hallways. Rockstars constantly hanging out, ripping away in a corner with an acoustic or an unplugged electric while having a conversation with someone! It was so incredible, I got to hang with so many greats, the early 80's were unbelievable really.

R.I.P. Don.
