Absolutely, as far as the JBLs - I had no idea (I've always been a celestion guy) and the first time I hit those speakers with some gain my mind was completely blown.

That was my exact impression when I saw that video of Johan Segeborn chugging on his orange frame D120F and knew I had to get some. I could tell it was something that just ain’t in the cards for celestions

Yeah mine are the 15" d130f from the dual showman ("dick dale") cab - the only other experience i had with 15s was from bass cabinets and the old randall warhead full stack back in the day, so I was expecting something completely different. I've messed around with some of the bassman cabs and stuff with the d120fs but never heard the Es.

My ‘64 Vibroverb has a single D130F, so I know sort of how it sounds in there vs my other JBL’s, but haven’t really heard it dirty. Maybe will have to try it. From what I can tell it doesn’t seem as efficient as my 12” JBL’s, but will have to explore more. Definitely has the same glassy JBL voicing

At least with 2 of them in that massive cabinet, it sounds absolutely massive - ymmv with the single, of course, but the sheer low end response plugging it into my larry was mind boggling

I won’t practically be able to do a real “all things equal” comparison with my D130F, but will try what I can comparing to my single 12” JBL’s. My current cabs are all standard sizes except my Friedman 212/215, so still probably won’t be able to match the low end of that cab you’ve got

I would try and experiment anyways though, I can't help but have the nagging feeling that Ive unfairly written off JBL type speakers for high gain stuff, and would love to hear some opinions

Absolutely! You’ve probably seen by now I endlessly do comparisons (even really silly ones). I’ll be able to at least get a feel about how they compare, but not a super exact answer

The JBL’s, Crescendos, and ‘60’s Alnico Blues can all be outstanding for high gain. I don’t get anything remotely David Gilmour-y when I use my Crescendo’s lol and I certainly don’t sound like Brian May on my blues either through my c+ or Naylor lol

Not also trying to side track from the vented 75’s because they’re also great speakers, but with an amp as good as you’re Larry I really encourage trying some of those if you can. Some I’m sure will work better with it than others. Also, those 20 pre-rola’s, but I need more of those (only have one), so back off lol

I stocked up on quite a few (6 Crescendos). They all sound great, but if you can find the early ones with clamp (not solder) lugs, they sound even better imo, but those are rarer and they still all sound really good. The Crescendo’s and Fanes in general IME are kinda like the speaker equivalent of Hiwatt’s. They sound huge and move a lot of air, but have that smooth and neutral character. You may or may not dig that and hard to say how the Larry would like it

Yeah I don’t really use the blues at volumes too high, but I’m actually honestly even more impressed with them for super high gain (especially creamy lead tones) than cleans to medium gain applications. They are so complex and 3D sounding. Maybe my all time favorites like the Klon of speakers

That's one of the reasons im curious to try them - the larry has SO much personality (that comes through no matter the speaker, at least that ive tried) I think it might be uniquely suited or at least interesting as an experiment to try it with something that neutral.

And yes, blues sounded EXCELLENT for leads, and very complex and "woody" - but youve heard my music, I'm a passing\decent lead player for my genre - but really more of a rhythm specialist for a certain type of metal. So perhaps I gravitate toward stuff that excels in my ultra-percussive niche.

FWIW, not sure which prerolas you tried in that cab, they all sound really good (I’ve got also a 25 Watt M magnet 75hz one), but the 20w one is very different sounding and feeling and for the stuff you play would def choose a 20w one over 25 (much tighter, faster, more aggressive, brighter, biting, no honky mid bump). Even the current Heritage 20’s sound great imo, but honestly nothing compared to my pre-rola one. It is the brightest speaker I’ve had though and not very thick, but very efficient and cutting. It’s kinda like a eating a lemon, but there’s still lots of rich flavor behind all the sour bite. I can’t get over how much I love it, but maybe too bright for some

Will be curious how the D130F’s translate in recording. For my friend’s re-amp we found the D120F’s too hollow as a whole quad, but worked really great when we crossed them with my ‘60’s Blues. His style is more punk/alt rock type stuff though fwiw. I know very little about recording and left that stuff to him, but seems like he knows what he’s doing

Yeah that would be cool! I’ve also thought about doing speaker comparison clips if a YouTube gear channel ever comes to fruition, but would have to cover more popular topics first to build an audience. Stuff like pedals, klons or whatever, and then get to the more nerdy/specific topics later

Right now I’m waiting for my friend to be back in February to do all the tech stuff like video, recording, etc., but it’ll happen. Will need to work a lot on my camera personality/stage presence lol and practice my electric more (I’m a classical guitarist mainly)

You have a Larry and I don’t yet, so that big hole in me is gonna be there a while still haha. It makes me feel very deprived, like an incomplete gear head. In fact I feel like I’m a hollow wizard or Hiwatt because of it

And the larry is an absolutely magical piece of gear for me as a player, but that's the thing - i'm not even truly a gearhead/collector guy, I'm a gigging guy - who knows what you'll think when you get yours. I've had tons of friends, both IRL and internet come and play it, and no matter their previous knowledge or expectations, every single one of them was pretty floored. But, some of them preferred their two rocks or their wizards or whatever still, so it's not like a magic bullet. Just a magic bullet for me, and square, and others.

I like any flavor that’s best in its class, so will be very surprised it the Larry wouldn’t be keeper worthy

But yes, that’s kinda my goal if I can get it going. I’m really not that satisfied with any of the gear channels I’ve seen, so hoping to give others what I wanted in them and hopefully they can get past my social clumsiness (at least early on). Won’t be any Ola or Fluff personality in me. I’ve got also some friends who are really great players to possibly be on some episodes. I’ve got this one friend who is one of the most impressive metal rhythm guitarists I know of, even over most famous YouTuber’s or guys in famous bands

Fwiw, i actually don’t like my Klon or most boosts with my Gjika, but that’s a good idea to demonstrate why in video. It’s a weird amp in what it likes. Doesn’t like Alnico speakers (Bob says so too) and seems to prefer it’s stock JJ KT77’s, which I usually don’t like. The Naylor has some excellent lead tones, but wait till I have a video also comparing it to my Purpleface or Jim Kelley. Endless stuff to cover…
