"My last project at Mesa was the Mark IIC+ reissue" - Randall Smith

Lotta shit talkers who think "Gibson is ruining everything at Mesa" might be interested to know that, lol.

I should probably watch before I comment but I have huge attention deficit disorder - unless I'm tracking down a troll. But just because it was his last project, doesn't necessarily mean he had a lot of input or affect. And some are saying the amp is just fine. The reissue that is.

I mean I guess he technically could have been the project manager on it or something, doing minimal tech work. But he could have also been the guy who designed the RI's board. He didn't go into any more detail on it than I quoted.

edit: youtube comment question (not mine) asking this and Randall's answer:

Holy shit there almost was a James Hetfield sig amp after all. Damn.

And this comes from someone, who owns the same Roland Jazz Chorus 120H head as James was/is using...why would you want THAT clean over a proper Mesa Mark clean channel? 🧐
If a Mesa Mark can be fully independant for clean and gain -so that one channel does not need to be compromised by the settings of the other-, you have all the clean clean you need and it remains clean even with the gain fairly cranked!

My JC120H is cool and all, also for vintage/nostalgia reasons as well as having a penchant for 24" wide tops and it can be run stereo, but if my Mesa DC-5 would have had the Mark IIC+ liquid high gain channel and a 3rd Mark V crunch channel, with its own clean channel as-is, I would be perfectly happy!
The only reason that I sold it, was the fact that the gain channel remained too flubby for my taste, even with typical Mark pre-EQ and gEQ settings and it needed a tightening boost to reign it in.
And IMO, Metallica's tone has suffered ever since the Diezels were introduced. Too much low mid woolyness goin' on.

completely agreed, i dont know why they love their diezels so much. cool amps for sure, but their tone was already perfect imo.
I've always felt that Janes best live tones were the Diezel VH4 blended with his Mesa rack. Those two sounds really complimented each other well.

Yeah, he rambles.. Wish he'd stay on topic.

Something about James straight up asking for a Roland and a Diezel channel in his amp cracks me up. Even more so that that wasn’t even the deal breaker
Not to mention how hard that is to accomplish. Almost sounds like a joke. But Randall said they got close. I wonder how close?

And welcome to Rig-Talk.

Blah blah blah

Must have just been the youtube videos you're judging from. They use the same shit and can sound different depending on the venue, shape of venue, arena, monitor positions, the recording method.... some of the best tone I've heard was diezel vh4 at rock am ring... juicy and growling... wasn't any wooliness at all.... you probably are mistaking the bass for being part of his guitar tone. F*ckin n00b.
