Rat as a boost?

I've never boosted my Marshall type amps with a Rat. Anyone here have experience with that?
 
I have a Rat2 I use in my chain. In a Marshall circuit it likes Distortion 7:00, Filter 9:30, Volume 3:30 ...YMMV. Sounds thicker than an SD-1 with more hair.
 
Nuno's been using them since forever in front of just about everything marshall, JMP, JCM, DSL. Alot of people like Nuno's tone.

They are distinct like Starman says, yes more hair with a plexi like clank to it with more aggression, not as smooth like a TS808 or SD-1. I have a reissue white face rat which I like alot.

Here's Nuno's settings Distortion 9:00 o'clock Filter 12:00 o'clock Volume 3:00 o'clock

 
Rats are awesome boosts.
From polite to rude I'd rate a TS808 as the smoothest, then an SD-1, then a Rat.
Keep the Gain around 9 o'clock and the volume around 2 or 3 o'clock. Tone where it works.
 


Trevor Peres from Obituary uses a Rat + 800 setup, sounds brutal. He's on the left channel in this video.
 
What type of sound are you aiming for? Trevor from Obituary uses a Rat as does Trey from Morbid Angel. A big part of Trevor's sound is the fact that he turns down his tone knob.

looking for something heavier than the typical TS type pedal. Looks like this is worth a try!
 
I love a Rat with a Marshall. I was using this sound in 1983 and again last night.

It should be mentioned that Trey from Morbid Angel routinely uses the Rack Mount Version.
 
A RAT (or variant) is my favorite boost for Marshall style amps.
 
I used one when I played metal with a marshall. Real good for boosting an older marshall to modern gain levels and the filter is useful to tighten it up.
 
I use a Rat2 with my Marshall Class 5 and a strat for a bluesy low/mid gain sound.

Set the amp clean and put the Rat2 distortion around 9:00 - 10:00, with the filter and volume knobs both around 3:00. Sounds awesome with a single-coil strat.
