Rebel 30 Head or Combo?

Well, I couldn't leave well enough alone...so I have a Renegade head on the way
If I like the Renegade, I might sell the R30 head and pick up a R30 combo just for grab-and-go stuff.

Hey Klark:

How else would you mic the amp? The Shure 57 was recommended to me. I have a Traynor that I used to use the direct out from the head - is that the way to go????

I just absolutely hate SM57's on guitar. My favorite is the original CAD e100, not the newer /2 model. The awesome sound of that mic is not without cost; You'll need phantom power, they're not very durable, they're hard to find, and ideally you should either low pass everything about 6K, or shelf the shit out of everything above say 7K or so. If you can deal with & provide those things, it's IMO the wickedest guitar mic on earth.

If you can't do all that, my 2nd favorite would be a Sennheiser e906. NOT the e609 Silver. The e609 Silvers aren't much better than a 57.

3rd place would be a Heil PR30, but they're incredibly picky on placement & cone woof.

If you're not into buying mics, or a 57 is all your soundguy has, then try to XLR out.. I'd be guessing, but I'd have to say it's definitely better than a 57.

Don't forget you can use the direct out on the back to go to the PA. It sounds really good and you wont need to carry any mic with you or rely on house gear.

Hi John:

Is direct out preferable to mic-ing with the 57 in your opinion?

I assumed the direct out was simulating the speaker cabinet sound, and for that reason not as "pure" a sound as mic-ing the cabinet.

I used the Egnater Rebel 30 at a gig this weekend. It outperformed my expectations! The cleans were punchy and bright and the gain channel was easily dialed in for the sound variety I needed for the show. I ran in through a Marshall 1936 Cabinet and mic'd it with a Shure SM57. I never had the amp's volume much past 9 o'clock, so there was lots of room if I needed it!

I received compliments from the bass player and drummer on my "much" improved sound. I have to agree that it dials in tones very nicely...plus the fact that it didn't kill my back lugging it to and from was a bonus.

Bottom line is this was the best $800 I have spent in a long, long time!

Absolutely RIGHT ON!!! I have spent the last two weeks preparing my Rebel 30 for gigging. I will be leaving the MOD 50 at home next gig, not that I don't love it. But you have voiced the exact reasons I will be gigging it. I'll post a thread on the new rig soon. Basic components are Rebel 30 Head, Mojo 1X12 with Egnater 80 with a Motion Sound SR 112. Pedals are Catalinbread Picoso Boost, Fulltone OCD, Xotic BB. Yamaha DG Stomp set for delay only in the loop. Strat & Les Paul.

Friends ... this set up rocks.

What modules are the Rebel 30's channels close to?

Good question. If I had to guess, the cleans are kinda Fenderish Deluxe, maybe T/D? And channel 2 maybe the EG 3/4? I could be completely wrong on this!!!

Anyone else?

Very accurate except I'd say the EG3/4 is way smoother and the Rebel 30 channel two is tighter, more in your face. I don't have a EG5 or SLX2 but it has a tighter feel, but still sweet like ... an Egnater.

I prefer the combo. It's less to carry. I do NOT want to make an extra trip in hauling stuff for the gig. Besides, the line out on this amp is superb (it really sounds like you're micing an amp) so an extra speaker cabinet would only benefit my stage sound. But since the Rebel 30 combo is a closed cab, a stack only makes sense if I want a 4x12 stage sound.

+1!!!

My same school of thought!
