Thinking about a 4x12 loaded with G12M-25 greenbacks. I want classic late '60s - late '70s tones. I'll be using an attenuator so not too concerned about the max power handling.

other options? G12M-65 creambacks? 2x12 options?

I have V30 cabs; looking for something different.

Thanks!

I’m in the same boat but no plexi…both my cabs have v30’s…I need another one and want something different.

I was looking for a pair of Creamback M-65s to blend with a pair of Marshall G12-Vintage speakers that I scored. But at the time, 16 ohm Creambacks were impossible to find. So I grabbed a pair of 65 watt Scumback M75s from Jim. I could not possibly be happier with these speakers. I have owned M65 Creambacks and always like how warm they are and how they kind of tame a bright guitar or amp. But they can be a bit ‘blanketed’ sounding. The Scumbacks have that same warmth, but also feel ‘livelier’ if that makes sense - more like a lower wattage Greenback. If you are considering the 65 watt Creamback M, do not overlook Scumback M75s!

In my experience even 25 watt greenback need volume to where they don't sound so wooly and really start to shine. If you aren't going to drive them hard at higher volumes most of the time then you might want to look into the 55Hz 12H-30 either vintage or reissue, they have a nice woody tone but don't sound wooly at low volumes which is why I really like both the 55 and 75Hz Heritage reissues from Celestion.

I used to have two quads of M75 65 watt scumback prerolas and they also needed to be driven at higher volumes to sound optimum, they also would sounded wooly at low volumes like my vintage 79 Blackback 25 watters that I still have in one of my cabs. All my other cabs now have 12H-30's both 55 and 75 HZ. I think it really came down to that fact that my ears just prefer the 12H-30 tone.

I would strongly consider the H75 Creamback. They sound great with mid-heavy amps like an old Marshall. The H magnet gives a firm bottom end and makes it a little less “floppy” than a M65 or Greenback. The top end is brighter than the M65 and Greenback but still darker than something like a V30. Amazing speaker. Also blends well with other speakers if you want to mix and match.

For classic 60-late 70's tones definitely check out the 55Hz Celestion Heritage 12H-30. They have that pre-rola woody tone to them but are still nice and tight. The 75Hz are tighter and a bit brighter.

Here's my 68 Ed spec plexi through two Scumback m75 65 watt quads.

Here's my 69 Ed spec through a single cab with 55Hz Celestion Heritage 12H-30 speakers pretty much right out of the box not break in time.

george metropoulos likes the Celestion Creamback H75...

Greenbacks would be great for the OP's intended purpose but I would take the attenuator and use it to anchor my boat up at my favorite fishing hole. No pushed speakers means no real 60s-70's tones.

G12K-85s are pretty sweet. However you can’t go wrong with G12-Ms.

True . Most guys don’t know how the favorite tones were at insane volumes with speakers about ready to blow up!

Good ole Heritage G12 65s will work great for this. A touch darker to offset the plexi bright, but can handle the thump of the power section. GBs of course work well too, but can fry easily.
All the other choices that are mentioned will work well.

playing without an attenuator is going to be few and far between, even with my earplugs. tinnitus for over 30 years and counting, doesn't need more. :D

why I'm asking for ideas; running this at volume is going to be rare; been over 30 years since I played through a 100W plexi at volume, pretty sure they were greenbacks - so that's my starting point for the sound I want.

Why not just get the 50 watt? I sold my 100 watt RI and plexi cab because there were literally about five gigs in 10 years where I could dig in all the way and at that point you couldn't hear the drummer and between me and the bassist's SVT rig we were setting off car alarms. 2nd guitarists 50 watt Super bass was like a toy by comparison.

50W vs 100W is only around 3 dB difference in loudness. NMV 50W still needs to be loud to get the sounds I want.

The 1959HW is hand wired and $1000 off vs the 1987x.

Have you ever played a 100 watt plexi and 4x12 wide open?

I have a straight 4x12 with G12H-30 70th Anniversary on the bottom and G12M-25 greenback on top. I like it for the vintage stuff.

I use a 1960B cab with Greenbacks and an EVH 4X12 with the stock EVH Celestions. The EVH cab is slightly smoother.
