Hey Guys,
After watching Pete Thorn's video on the original amp in 2021 I knew I had to try and recreate that amp at some point. The time has come...
I was never really interested in the lower-gain Jose mods without the diodes until I learned that it was the mod used on Dr. Feelgood. It is really interesting how the amp sounds in the room vs. through the mics. In the room, the sound is bonedry with little gain, but doubletrack it and you have a huge wall of sound that seems more gainy than it actually is, especially in a mix.
I was very lucky to get in contact with someone who knew the amp from back in the day. He told me what he could remember and we guessed some of the other details together. After tweaking the variables that were left, I think this is as close as I can get with my particular Super Lead. It's from 1972 and has the rare Drake transformers of that era. I'm pretty sure that the original '73 Jose has the standard Dagnall ones, as they're so much more common. At least the voltage seems to be in the right ballpark though, as mine has 505V on the plates and I was told that the original amp also had very high voltages.
Of course, I was inspired by Pete's intro, so I also covered the beginning of Dr. Feelgood, so that there can also be a comparison to the original amp recorded in 2021.
I used a backing track that I pulled from YouTube that seems to be made from the original tracks.
I used my 1991 1960BX cab and miced it with an SM57 and a 90s MD421, both off-axis. Bob Rock mentioned both mics when asked about his choices for guitar cabs. He also mentioned a U87, but I don't have one.
