Renegade Head and Emi Speaker pairing Ques.

I swapped around a bunch of tubes in my Renegade. As far as preamp tubes go, there's so many that all I could do was to start with channel 1 and swap around V1 and find the best sounding tube and then go to V2 and find the best sounding tube. V1 and V2 are for channel 1. V1 also feeds channel 2. Then go to channel 2 and swap out V3 until you find the best sound and then swap out V4. V3 and V4 are channel 2.

I have some JJ's and Tung Sols and a Shuang in there in various places. V1 is the most important for the overall tone of the amp and is common to both channels.

I got a set of Winged C EL34's and they sound better than the stock tubes. I haven't changed out the 6L6's.

Happy Turkey Day Weekend Everyone,
I know it's been awhile since I last replied on this subject,... just thought I had some time to throw an update.
Well, since all you great people chimed in with advice and suggestions... Speaker wise, I chose a Celstion G12t- 75... It arrived by UPS a couple of weeks back and last night , I loaded it next to the V30......
NOW, I just have to wait for my Head to come back from repair out in CA. ( warranty covered )..... Sheesh!!! If it ain"t one thing, it's another.....
Shortly after chatting with everyone, I turned my amp on to play and try out some different EQ tweeks while ponderring over a speaker choice....
After moving the Mid pot on Channel 1 to just past Noon, the volume shot up real loud for a few seconds and then fizzled back down to original level.
There's no "scratchyness" to the sound , just the volume influctuation... and it didn't happen just once... could sit there and do those same motions and same results all day,.. every day..... my guess, Bad dial pot or cold solder ? trace wire on board...maybe.
Either way,... let me just throw this out there,... Companies REALLY need to do a better job of Quallity control. From what I've read on here and other forums.... Bad , cheap , stock tubes, sockets, bad trace wires on boards, blown transformers, cold solder joints, bad fuses. Hell, if you have to add 50$$ to each amp just to have people take a little extra time in final inspection before it goes out the door... then so be it. I'm sure there is not one person out there, that would dispute that added cost if it meant having a hassel free experience with someones product.
Sure , I could have scratched and saved for a year, to buy a Mercedes , but my Chevy should perform for the first year without these hic-ups.
Well, enough for now,... the amp's been out there for 2 weeks,.. and it's the Holiday wkd.... hope I hear an update from someone soon over in Egnaterland,.. fixed and fine sounding is all I want for Christmas... LOL!!!! I ve got speakers to break- in...
Everyone stay safe and thanks again for the chats.

That sucks. Speakers ready to go and no amp. Why CA? Are there no authorized techs near you or is that where all warranty repairs go? I don't even have my Renegade yet, ordered should be here later next week, and my only hesitation has been if it will be reliable. 45 days to find out.

I'll be trying it with one of my 2x12 cabs with EVM 12Ls. Has anyone tried those speaker with their Renegade?

Yeah Slaughter,
There were 4 different Tech places here in Illinois that would/ could do the work under the Warrenty guidelines, but every one of them were backed up schedule wise, I wouldn't have seen my amp until the New Year.... So decided to send it back out to Bruce and his team at Egnater.
From what I've heard on YouTube , and my own experience within the first 5 mos. of owning the Renegade, The clean channel is every bit as good as the boutique amps ,if not the best I've heard.... On the second channel , It's good , just missing something to me, IMO... I'm hoping that I find that magic tube/ speaker mix.....
I've never hear of those brand of speakers you spoke of???? Got a little insight to what brand/ model there close to sounding like???
Reliability seems to be a small percentage of ones out there that have issues..... I guess maybe that mine was made on a Mon. or Fri.... LOL!!!

xfactor27,

Those are Electro Voice speakers. 200 watts each with no breakup I've ever witnessed. EVM 12L is the model. They are a fairly neutral speaker unlike a V30 or others but thats what I like most of the time. Biggest drawback for me is they weight twice as much as most any other speaker. Popular in Fender Twins to Mesa amps. To me they sound very clear, articulate with a very balanced sound. Nice low end and crisp highs but not shrill. Seems like people either love them or hate them. Kind of like Vintage 30s.

Happy Sunday to everyone,
Just wanted to throw out a quick update on my Renegade Head tone issue. After getting the Head back from repair, I set to work on first making sure the original issue was fixed, and two new EQ pots were replaced on channel 1. Thank you to Nate and the Tech crew for taking the time and having the repair done correctly.
Now, let me put in here that I still ,... tonally, could not get along with the stock tubes.
I've done a total RE- tube and re-bias.
A set of Groove Tube 6l6's ( GE Re-branded ) - biased at 65Mv
A set of Mullard re-issue El 34's - biased at 70 - 71
The Pre's are a mixture of : V1 - Tungsol 12ax7, V2 - JJ Ecc 83
V3 - Mullard ( re-issue ) 12ax7 , V4 JJ Ecc 83
V5 is an old GT 12at7 I had laying around.... V6 has a Sovtek 12ax7 LPS
Finally have what IMHO is a great speaker mix of an Avatar Cab 212... Celstion V30 / Celestion 12h GT75
Channel 1 has those sweet Fendery Butter-ness.... Boost it with an overdrive pedal it's a great classic rock / blues tone
Channel 2 is great on it's own with a little " hair " and good grind.... again boost it with the overdrive pedal, and it can do 80's metal.
All has been nice and tight with minimal flubb, more than likely from my sloppy playing.... LOL!!!!
Happy, Happy, JOY, JOY.....
Thanks to all, again, for your chime ins and advice.
Have a good one.
