Rule #1: get Bare Knuckle pickups and at least 500k pots
Rule #2: do not not make your les paul sound like crap by setting the strings as low as possible
Rule #3: no floyd roses, for god's sake
Rule #4: repaired necks can be very reliable, but you better be sure you can get a refund just in case it's not a stable one
Rule #5: do not ignore Rule #1

All that, especially #1.

Got Holydivers in mine and it kicks all ass.

been making lots of plans these days on raising money for a custom short les paul

Nice dude...you in touch with him at all?

I've been thinking about getting a Black Dog and 550K for my Studio.
Black Dogs are SO righteous in the Lester

As to the above:

not really
how are the payments done?
still gotta make some serious cash
did he charge you for the body/neck only and you sent him the parts?
already made a list of my requirements, specially regarding the finish and details, and some hardware parts are very specific (satin nickel tonepros and sperzels, brushed nickel bkps)

Great tips. Bare knuckles were already on my short list for pups.

this will probably go up to $1000-1200, and still might be worth it

Yes, very nice. Finding a body only is high on my list of options. It would not hurt my feelings one bit to gut my SG Special for it.

And no, that's a Granger in my avatar. Super cool guy down in Birmingham makes those high gain amps. I'll plug him all day long. Here is the demo video where he is using the head he built for me: https://youtu.be/5BtE4wzag1U

As others have said play every Les Paul you can find and one will speak to you. Probably more than one but get the one that fits you best. Then get the bug and buy more. My favorite at the moment is an '03 standard in I believe Black Cherry. But I hated it when I first got it. After a setup and a few weeks with it it became my go to guitar. Came with a JB in the bridge and Jazz in the neck and it just rips. Only Les Paul I ever played and didn't care for was a 2011 Traditional ( pretty sure that's what it was) it just felt plastic and the tone was weak. We changed the pots and did all kinds of stuff it just never sounded good. Not saying some wouldn't have liked it but my friend who owned it and I both just thought it was MEH! YMMV but there is nothing and I mean nothing like the right Les Paul. Good luck on your search. Also don't believe the hype about weight relieved or non weight relieved if you can hear the difference you and Eric Johnson should have a convo about how you know when the 9volt battery in whatever pedal you are running isn't at exactly 9 volts. I currently have 9 Les Paul's from an 81/82 always forget the year to a 2011 and they are all pretty sweet and most are weight relieved. Not sure on the earliest as it weighs a ton. Also mine are all standards until I pay off the 2006 Les Paul custom Black Beauty that I am procuring from a friend. As for the chambered that is a different story my friends cloud 9 sounded tons better than his Traditional. Again play them play them play them. Peace.
