Rev 2 vs. Twin Jet

So after deciding that my Rev Blue's brighter voicing was not really my thing, I've decided to sell it and pick up either a Rev 2 or Twin Jet. I'm looking for something a bit darker than the Rev Blue. I realize that the Twin Jet is tighter than the Rev 2, but that can be fixed with a Tubescreamer that I already have. Both sell used for about the same price. In your experiences, which amp would be the better buy?

Mostly home, but there is a strong possibility for live use as well.

Twin jet can get darker with the added global prescence. The ability to have the dirty channel which is a killer modern Marshall vibe that competes with the uber is a plus as well. The 150 watts is not very bedroom but by using the fx loop volume I could tame it for good lower volume sounds.

TJ with the clean taper mod for Ch.1 hands down.

Looks like the Twin Jet is winning. I like the external bias points, the added FX loop volume and global master/presence controls, and the ability to change to EL34's with the removal of a resistor if I get sick of the KT88's. But at the same time, 150 watts is a bit much for my needs and I'll miss a true clean channel. I think I can deal with that for the added versatility.

The clean taper mod will allow a fairly decent clean on Ch.1 with no reduction in the gain. The mod can be done and has been done in house at Bogner HQ.

Peace,
V.

I'll add my cent and say that personally, I'm not that happy with the clean tones I pulled out from the amp.

One of the problems is that to get the bass that you'd expect from a good clean tone you have to max the depth control, but with the depth that high the distortion on channel 2 sounds really exaggerated and unuseful.

My problem with it is not to actually get it "clean" but the fact that the EQ of the amp wasnt really built for that application, and you can hear it.

FWIW, I asked some people here about settings for a clean tone on TJ, didnt get anything that changed my mind.

If you are buying a new one, try to convince bogner to mod the 1st channel to be a rev blue clean,
that's what I would do if I could go back, I almost never use channel one for it's overdrive capabilities.

This. I agree. The amp has no clean tone if you ask me. If you max the gain on channel one you will have another really nice heavy drive. It is a little less compressed than channel 2. More open. It also has better cut. I think it sounds great. As soon as I turn the gain below max it turns to shit. As Tripled posted it just doesn't sound good.

I'd mod it to be clean but I dont trust anyone in Israel to do this nor do I want to drop the amp's value.

On reharsel volumes it still sounded ok though, didnt feel pale next to my friend's mesa roadster clean, but I hate mesa's clean\od channels with a passion so thats not really a sign for anything.

I'm planning to buy an axe fx and run it with the 4 cable method, getting clean tones from the axe and distorted from the bogner.

Just bought moltenmetalburn's Twin Jet. Thanks for the advice all!

Let us know what are your impressions if you get to compare between them.

Will do. I should change this thread title to Rev Blue vs. Twin Jet lol.

Or conversely, (All Other Uberschalls) vs Twin Jet :D

I've gotten some decent cleans just by rolling down the vol. on Ch.1.

So, I finally got the Twin Jet up and running. Tubes weren't matched, but that will be fixed. For my brief impressions, I can say that the Twin Jet is WAY tighter than the Rev Blue, especially unboosted. I also find it to be more articulate and with better note separation for leads. I don't know what the hooplah is about with the allegations that you can't get clean tones off of Channel One. It's just not true! They aren't Fender sparkly, but they are about as good as the ones off the Rev Blue IMO. The amp overall has a darker tonality, and there seems to be an emphasis on the lower mids that's somehow different from the Rev Blue, which sounded brighter in the upper mids to me. This one has the clean channel mod, and I find it to be a much more exciting and versatile amp already than the Rev Blue. Channel One really can get a myriad of tones out of it, anything from decently clean to JCM 800 sounds. For some reason, this thing doesn't sound as hissy or with as much high-frequency fizz running through the Uberkab- another definite plus.

Overall, once I get this tube issue settled I'm sure it'll be a beast. It seems that the Twin Jet's second channel was made for more intricate and faster metal riffs and leads than the Rev Blue's was, which always gave me a more hard rock vibe. It could be the KT88's or the added controls in the master section, but in either case, it suits my needs a lot more. It's already becoming the amp I tried to make the Rev Blue for about a year with pedals, tube swaps, and hours of dialing in, but failed. I'm definitely glad I swapped them out. :)

Its nice when a plan comes together. Sometimes you win  Try different settings. It's not a conventional EQ as you know. Try turning the treble knob on channel 2 up to about 4:00 Gave mine some swet singing highs. I use the 77's though. I'm sure that makes a difference. There known for great highs.

Yep, I found that too. I like a lot of treble in my tone, so anything past 3:00 is awesome. I also have liked keeping the depth control down to tighten up the amp. I'll try the KT88's for awhile longer, but if I get sick of them I might clip the resistor off and try the EL34's. Someday I'll try the Gold Lion KT77's... God, those were great tubes!

If you do, desolder it instead of clipping it. It's easy enough. The Gold Lions are great in this amp. Turning the treble counterclockwise adds mids. For cleans I found I need to crank the channel one volume and then balance both channels with the global master because of the volume decrease when the gain on 1 is lowered.

Yep, it was the same thing on the Rev Blue's clean channel. Reducing gain drastically reduces volume. I can already tell that dialing in this channel is going to be pretty interesting...
