Rev 2 vs. Twin Jet

Yep, it was the same thing on the Rev Blue's clean channel. Reducing gain drastically reduces volume. I can already tell that dialing in this channel is going to be pretty interesting...
Did you notice the bass control does not add bass? It seems like there is a set amount of bass in the preamp. The bass control seems to me to be more of a negative feedback control where clockwise opens the tone and couterclockwise tightens the tone. It does add bass but only in the same way an NFB control does. In the power section. I could be wrong but it sure seems like it. I have had NFB mood controls before which seem very similar.

Yeah I did notice that. I'll have new, lower-rated tubes tomorrow (an actually matched quad, too), and so I'll be able to play with it a bit more. From what I've seen, channel two's controls seem to be a bit different than the Rev Blue's. You can add more gain on the Twin Jet without it getting too saturated and it isn't as fizzy. Good stuff! :)

BTW, what preamp tubes do you guys like for V4?

A Tung Sol sounds pretty good in there. You just have to watch them as they don't last very long in my experience. The new Mullard reissue lose transconductance fairly quickly as well.

Yeah, the Tungsols I've used burned out pretty quickly. Right now there's a JJ 803s in there, and it sounds pretty nice. I bet a Tungsol would be a good compromise between getting clean and higher-gain tones.

Yep. Just need to keep an eye on them if you have a tester. They lose gm and you don't know it but your amp starts to lose volume. Man I had mine on 5 master and 5 channel 2 and can't stand near the cab. It has a very focussed tone.

Got another question. What made you guys change from the KT88's to the EL34's?

You are asking the wrong guy

I don't like the way the KT88s break up when they do, and I like some power tube breakup. The EL34's break up nicely and take away some of the glassiness the 88's are known for. The 34's did not hold together enough for my tastes which is why I went with the 77's. They stay nice and tight and sound great as well. I like what they add to the equation. Some guys sold their Twin Jets and the 88's probably had allot to do with it. Not that they are bad in any way, they are just more of an aquired taste. An EL34 guy may not jibe with 88's. If they had tried 34's or 77's they would have felt differently about the Twin Jet. I love the amp. The Shiva will go before it does. BTW, If someone else doesn't post soon, we are going to get those emo fag hands from the smiles menu. :emofag: :grim:

I loved my TJ loaded with KT88s, and did NOT want to change them to anything else. I thought they sounded so sweet. I can't say I maxed the amp out, it was so f*ckin' loud, I never made it past 3 o'clock; I say this because albeit KT88s do sound (typically) like shit when they break up, they also have gobs of power, and loads of headroom, so pushing 'em to break up is a hard thing to do. I didn't do it with my TJ, and it held tight with loads of bass and loads of color everytime.

As for glass? Preamp, specifically, I dug Chinese C in every socket.

As for dilaing it in, ya, it was fun watching the odd session dude swing by drunk or high trying to "dial it in", kind of a different "counter intuitive" amp for EQing, but it get's figured out and sounds magic when it does.

I found it limited in my use, I dig more organic tones... But for metal? Or uber aggro toonage and riffage?? I LOVED this amp. Period.

Anyway, play more - enjoy - crank it - feel it. The TJ holds a special place in my heart and sonic soul

Ha!

Yeah, I typically like Chinese 9th in my Ubers as well. I haven't tried C's yet, so I might do that at some point. In any case, the new set of tubes come in today, and (hopefully) they'll bias within range. I'd hate to have to change a resistor within a week of owning the amp!

Got the new KT88's in... finally biasing within range now. They're 49's, and they're all running at 38mA. Sounds so, so much better. :)

Took the plunge and took the Twin Jet to be modded with the EL34/KT88 switch. Gonna through some Winged C's in there.
