It is a fair point to make and I hear comments like this a lot but I guess the difference is, none of us know your friend with cancer or what she has gone through, but many people do know Cornell's music and might associate it to a time when they were going through hardships. Furthermore, to counterpoint, mental illness doesn't discriminate. Your friend with cancer seemed to have kept control of her faculties, many people who suffer from depression can't control what is going on in the brain. In many cases, people who have everything, have nothing left to strive for and that tips them over the edge as well. It also is very common when a "star" passes, for everyone to feel as if that person had a way bigger influence on them than they actually did. I see that here as well from time to time.

There is way too much ignorance in your post. Think about it... Fame, fortune, looks, talent, money...etc. and the guy offs himself. You shouldnt feel sorry that he had all those things, you should feel sorry that he was so fucked mentally he decided that ending it all is better. Mental illness is horrible. Everyone gets down, everyone has problems, some big and some small, but not everyone is mentally ill enough to take their own life. Some see suicide as a cop out, but for some people it seems its the only way. Thats a fact and it sucks!!! You should be thankful you dont have mental illness and are just stupid..

Damn... you clearly have ZERO understanding of depression. Doesn't matter how rich and adored you are when you're in the throws of deep depression. Doesn't matter that you've got everything to live for, while [very unfairly] some poor young mother [or CHILD even!!!] has cancer and is dying. There's no making sense of clinical depression. And many people go through their lives in deep emotional pain that doesn't show on the surface. And then they just decide that they want the pain to stop.

I HATE that young mothers, children, old mothers, etc get cancer. And as the survivor of a beloved family member who committed suicide who's gunshot-to-the-head body I found in '95 and have never fully gotten over... I HATE that people feel so hopeless that it's the only way they feel they can escape the pain. But damnit... that doesn't make him a "fucking jack ass" any more than your shitty, uneducated opinion makes you one (though your post kinda does). RIP Chris, RIP Ray (the family member), RIP young mothers who succumb to cancer... etc. Sometimes life is hard man... even for "poor little rock star guys". Besides being an amazingly talented musician, Pete has been a genuinely nice guy on the forums over the years. VERY FEW world class players who tour the world with household names have bothered to actually participate and engage on the cess pools that are web forums -- where anonymity seems to make people think that acting like complete asshats is somehow a worthy and equal option as being actual civilized human beings during social interactions. Pete also writes a very insightful column for Premier Guitar (and it's the column that I automatically look for when I pick up an issue). Cripes man... go find some class.
